It's funny that Ray Rice is actually more versatile at his position than Elvis Dumervil is at his position.

Re: Report: Dumervil Agrees to Deal with the Ravens

For everyone thinking that this means Suggs is gone at the end of this year, it doesn't. Remember, Suggs is only 30... 15 months older than Dumervil. He's got productive years left, assuming his injuries haven't robbed him of his talent. But this way we'll have the confidence that if we have to let him go after this season because he's ineffective, we'll have someone else who can take over there. More likely, we can negotiate an extension with him after the season based on his performance for the year. If he has a strong season and looks like the 2011 Suggs, we'll give him a "Raven for life" contract that'll keep him around for another 4-5 seasons and defer the pain of his cap number a while longer. If he proves to be mediocre, we can lean on him for a reduction or a smaller extension, cutting him as a last resort.

Regardless, Dumervil's signing winds up being an excellent addition. We get a guy who would have been one of the top 8-10 free agents on the market if he had been available day 1, and we got him for less than the guy we knew we were letting go to Cleveland. This is a huge win for the Ravens.

We still have holes to fill on the defense, namely at free safety and ILB, but as has been noted, guys like Huff and Dansby are still out there, and getting cheaper by the day. And if we bring in no one else, we'll probably draft players at those positions next month. The only position we're unlikely to fill with a quality player at pick 32 is LT... even a guy like Menelik Watson wouldn't be able to step in this year. We still have some space to bring back McKinnie if we want. Based on how the draft is shaping up, we can still expect to fill those holes in the middle of the defense with first and second round picks if we want to: Ogletree, Te'o, Minter, Arthur Brown, Matt Elam, Eric Reid, Baccari Rambo, and more are all expected to be around. We have the picks to trade up and the freedom to trade back if we want to.

All told... not such a bad offseason after all.

Welcome to Baltimore, Elvis. Hope you work out better than the last Elvis we signed.

Yea, but he needs to pass the ball more.

As someone who has noted that Doom is not that great against the run, he's not nearly as bad as you are suggesting. Look at our playoff game against them for instance. Against McKinnie, he didn't get a sack but his run defense was quite good. Against a better run blocker he will struggle some (Joe Thomas) but on the other hand this is a passing league now.

Doom is a nice upgrade to Kruger for cheaper. This move along with Spears and Canty makes our DL and front 7 much deeper and you gotta have depth to compete. Rotating players is a must these days.

You gotta look at this as a win.

Thyrl nelson had a good comment: we basically traded Kruger for Dumervil and a 4th round (comp) pick

Just spoke to Elvis Dumervil briefly, he's out celebrating with his family. On joining the Ravens: "I'm happy. I'm good."

Yeah but he'll throw for like -1 passing yards for a whole season on 500 pass attempts just like how he has a billion attempts to rush the passer and gets like 6 sacks for a whole season.

Through most of this process, Broncos offer was better than Ravens. Broncos went $8 million in sal+sign with first offer Monday night.

    Ravens didn't go to $8.5 in salary/bonus in 2013 till last night/today.
