He also criticised Sweden's response to COVID and IIRC he thought Sweden were going to end up having millions deaths because of it, which turned out to be so wrong. Sweden had one of the least excess death rates in Europe, while in the UK, we had one of the worst despite very strict shutdowns on three separate occasions. He also constantly talks about how his administration were right to "act" the way they did and completely exaggerated the severity of the virus by claiming there would have been "10s of millions of deaths" without the intervention.

Not saying that countries should have done nothing, there absolutely was the need to bring in some kinds of health interventions into society to protect the elderly. Brazil are a good example of a country that was bought to its knees for a period of time because they basically done nothing. Now Brazil have a corrupt socialist in charge. But excessive lockdowns and mass stimulus bills via the central bank printing money and buying back it's own bonds was absolutely not the right way to go about it all.

With all that said if you are a small government guy, Trump is simply not the right candidate. He is the definition of big government. He believes in running up massive amounts of debts and refuses to even talk about social security reform. He has pulled the wool over many of the rights eyes and he can literally do no wrong.... I think he done some good things like cutting some taxes and regulations and the markets done very very well under his premiership... But he is not going to take America back to its glory days of small government and the land of the free IMO.
First off, do you have something that says Trump was for all of these lock downs past the initial month or so?

Trump actually had the position that each state should decide for itself. None of the lock downs, save federal offices, came from the federal government under Trump.

Do you have quotes that show Trump criticized Sweden? I don't recall that. I could have missed it.

As for small government, which one of the other candidates do you think is? Rand Paul is the only POTUS candidate on the last several decades who really is small government.

Well, I don't know the article, maybe I saw it but I don't recall it. In any case Sweden's COVID death rate was no where near 10X higher than surrounding countries. I believe it was lower.

Maybe they’re getting behind the guy that has a shot at beating Trump?

This is from the article, no I didn't "fact check the article but I will go out on a limb and believe the numbers were accurate at the time of the article. I am no mathematician by any standard but I think 10 x 200 = 2,000......I know I am not exact exact but you get my point.

"Despite reports to the contrary, Sweden is paying heavily for its decision not to lockdown. As of today, 2462 people have died there, a much higher number than the neighboring countries of Norway (207), Finland (206) or Denmark (443),” he tweeted. “The United States made the correct decision!”

In total deaths per million population, Sweden had 2383, with Finland at 1742, Denmark at 1490 and Norway at 986.

It looked bad early for Sweden, but then after the initial shock, their whole country had natural immunity and the rest of the world caught up to them to some degree. They finished at the bottom of their peers, but certainly not 10 fold.

Total deaths was the method the Media used to constantly paint the US as handling it the worst so they could keep us scared and locked down, it’s a useless means of comparison.

That doesn't change my mind one bit. They hated Trump in 2016 and they hate him now. No surprise.

You are either concerned about personality or policies.

I would likely vote for DeSantis even though the last R I voted for was Bush in 2000, and by June I knew it was a bad vote.

That's fine, a link would be helpful.

Those are also low numbers in the sense of how the counting and what constituted a COVID death in one place vs. another would make a big difference.

I am quite confident of this, Sweden ended up no worse. This must have been very early on.

Ok so I was wrong about him claiming Sweden would have millions of deaths.... But he is still criticizing their stragedy which was very similar to Florida's. I don't know how much of this was down to politics... But I know that most of us are in agreement that Florida and Sweden for the most part had the right approach, and it seems like Trump does not agree.

Trump didn't have to bring in a federal nationwide lockdown (for starters that would have been unconstitutional)... What he did instead was bail out states who decided to lockdown. If there was no stimulus bills, states wouldn't have had the resources to afford lockdowns apart from the likes of New York and California.

You are right though, the main candidates are not small government guys. I did think Desantis could have been that guy, but looks like I was wrong about that. I guess you could argue that Nikki Hailey is kind of small governmentish.

I just think as an outsider, Trump seems like he has turned the republicans into the Trump party. He has such a strangle hold over them, and yes in some ways that's a good thing because he has destroyed the RINOs. But he also destroyed the Tea party in the process.

Trump destroyed the tea party? Cmon. The establishment took out the tea party.

Point taken and agreed, I was going by the numbers as of the writing of the article. I personally was against lock downs in general. Using hindsight what Florida did was actually the best path.....protect the vulnerable and allow the healthy to live their lives. I is/was never a fan of masking either. Thought it was pointless. But I guess we had to look as if we are doing something. It's still funny to me seeing people wearing mask today. Mask went from "we don't wear a mask to protect ourselves ( because it's pointless) but to protect others". Covid is a airborne virus that can attach itself to a surface, doesn't have a particularly long life but can be spread simply by touching the infected surface. Like many viruses it simply had to run it's course. IMO they knew this the entire time......that and like many other viruses the human body would just have to build an immunity to it naturally.

I always believed it was done on purpose......but that's just me. I know......why would China allow millions of people die? I say go ask the Uighurs, muslims or the Mao victims.

There are very few ..if any …governments around the globe who would actually care about killing millions of unsuspecting people. Our world is ruled by greed and thirst for power. Most will do whatever it takes to achieve wealth and power.

100% was done on purpose, that much is all but known.
Protect the vulnerable and chicken pox or was always the right plan. Everyone knew it.
I rarely go a day without seeing someone alone in their car with a mask on in my daily endeavors.
