Explanation on the rookie salary cap and how it works...

Sometime during the weeks follow this year’s NFL draft, the league will announce each team’s “Year One Rookie Allocation” (formerly known as the “Rookie Pool” or “Rookie Salary Cap”). This is an oft misunderstood number, because while it is part of the team’s Salary Cap, it does not have a dollar-for-dollar impact on the team’s overall Salary Cap.

The Rookie Salary Cap is often referred to as “a cap within a cap” because it limits the amount that teams can allocate to their rookies in the year they were drafted. But, beyond that, there is a lot of confusion about the Rookie Salary Cap and exactly how it works.

So what they're saying is that draftee contracts are kind of like MLB draftee contracts, where you make almost nothing in salary, but what seperates the best and worst contracts is the signing bonus?

With all rookies getting 4 year contracys will that eliminate RFA and ERFA? Or will UDFA still be able to be signed to shorter contracts and be eligable to be RFA/ERFA?

Yes, it will, for the most part, get rid of RFAs and ERFAs. The Ravens gave all of their UDFAs 3-year deals this year, so any of them making the team would not be ERFAs if they stay with the team. They would become RFAs after their 3rd year.

However, if they are released and later re-signed or signed from the PS, they would likely only be playing under a 1-year deal, so they would then be ERFAs or RFAs in the future.
