Re: OT - Paterno announces retirement

That press conference was bizarre. The shouted questions from the (I assume) petulant local media bespoke a lot about how something like this could have gone on so long unchallenged.

The CEO from US Steel came off as the only (first) grown-up to play a part in this mess since it broke over the weekend.

More reports of mace being used, reporters warned to stay clear by police who say they're about to clear the streets. Approximately 400 state troopers on hand.

JoePa came out of his home and spoke briefly to students gathered there. Tells students to "Go study".

Update: Crowd overturned a news van. Because you know, the media is to blame?

Reports are that this thing is about to get a lot worse in the next 72 hours. Major allegations about Sandusky and his Second Mile organization.

Boozed up teenagers do stupid things - look at U of M after every Duke win. And in other breaking news, the sky is still blue.

    Don't forget stoned students too.

These actions by the students, stoned, drunk or otherwise,
show they approved of the cover up and are just as guilty as the participants who
    covered up this despicable crime.

Now the Feds are getting involved. Rumor has it the FBI will be involved very soon as they will begin investigating Sandusky allegedly transporting children some who became victims across state lines to PSU road games. Games in which he was a guest of the program. Yup, this is gonna get very very ugly. More victims will come forward. Sandusky did not start being a pedophile in his 50's.
Eventually we will hear many many more of the details of how this man (Sandusky) wrapped himself in the credibility given to him by his affiliation with the football program and used the PSU campus as his own personal playground. As with any cover up of this magnitude, the seedy details will start out as a trickle and will become a tidal wave very quickly. I dont see those details doing anything to reedem Paterno or any of these other men. I would not be shocked if once the FBI etc get involved, that new evidence comes out and Joe could eventually face criminal charges. The Feds are much more efficient at getting information and are not beholden to local politics, winks, nods and backroom handshakes. Good luck PSU your gonna need it.

This will cost the school millions in marketing their merchandise.
A lot of the millions Joe brought in will disappear over the long term.

I think Penn State is big enough to survive losing Paterno, many alumni wanted him gone a decade ago.

On a different note. I gotta believe that if the riots start up again tonight, PSU might have to consider canceling the game or playing it in an empty stadium. It would be a powder keg on Saturday unless someone steps in and get this under control. Can you imagine whats gonna happen when Nebraska fans open their mouths...oiy vey. Especially if that game goes bad for PSU. PSU has a responsibility to provide a safe environment for that game to be played in. If I were the PSU board of trustee's, I would issue a statement that says something along the lines of this.....

PSU supports freedom of speech and the right of any American to express their opinion in a appropriate and peaceful way. We cannot however condone acts of violence and vandalism against people or property. With this in mind we are the board of trustee's believes should acts of violence and vandalism continue, we will have no choice other than to cancel the game this Saturday and submit a forfiet to the Big 10. While we support the lawful expression of free speech, we cannot in good conscious conduct a football game if there could be doubt about the safty of the attendees. We know our students will do the right thing. We have faith that they will represent PSU in a way their leaders failed to.

Kudos to the board for not allowing this guy to go out on his own terms. He doesn't deserve it.
