Ravens withdraw RFA tenders to Marcus Smith and Jalen Parmele

    RavensInsider Aaron Wilson
The Ravens withdrew their qualifying restricted tenders to WR Marcus Smith and RB Jalen Parmele, making them free agents.

FWIW, Smith, Parmele and Divens all received RFA tenders of $1.2M (which may have gone up some with new CBA).

By releasing them, the team created $2.475M in Cap space.

I've been wondering if this would happen since they were longshots to make the team. IMO Cousins and Gooden should be cut too but I don't see it happening.

I hope this translates into some kind of legitimate move.

These moves are both real head scratchers.

I don't think it entirely to do with them being longshots, because injuries can change a player's spot on the depth chart very quickly.

Either these guys are out of shape (Divens failed his physical) or they are looking to make Cap room and these guys are the easiest to release (and if they didn't need the cap space, they wouldn't be releasing them).

I don't think any of these guys had a legit spot on the team.

Smith was a heck of special teams guy, but I think Chykie Brown was sorta drafted to be an ideal gunner, and we still have Cary Williams. And WR is kinda crowded right now.

I never thought much of Parmelee and we have enough kick return guys.

Makes a lot of sense. Why would you pay both of those guys a combined 2.475 million? Berry and Allen are cheaper better options at RB than Parmele and with Chykie Brown we have a new ST gunner to replace Smith.

UPDATE: They withdrew Paramele's RFA tender, but he apparently signed a minimum salary deal ($600K) instead:

That was a smart move by Jalen Parmele. He will still get an opportunity to back up Ray Rice and is the longest tenured RB otherwise. Marcus Smith was, has and always will be buried on the depth chart.

Smith also signed a minimum deal:

On Marcus Smith and Jalen Parmale, both had their $1.2 million RFA tenders withdrawn. Both signed to smaller deals. Smith is at $600,000 now

So, those two moves saved them only $1.2M in cap space. Add in Divens, who appears to truly be gone and it's a total of $2.025M saved.

    every dollar counts

    If we carry 6 WRs...

Boldin, T.Smith, Doss, Reed, Mason/FA WR. That leaves one spot open. Question is, will it be Marcus Smith, the perennial ST guy, Justin Harper, who's on his last legs in the NFL, James Hardy, who I am really rooting for, or a UDFA guy. Heard LaQuan Williams is really impressing in camp so far.

Marcus Smith is a great ST. But he offers nothing in terms of WR play.
