Illegal formation by NE on the nullified Edwards sack?
In the broadcast, Phil Simms says, just prior to the snap "That's illegal formation". The result of the play is an Edwards sack, nullified by an illegal contact call and an automatic first down for NE. They would go on to score their 2nd touchdown on this series.
Since I don't know all the nuances of formations, what's illegal about this?

I remember that play. Afterwards, Simms said there were not enough men on the line of scrimmage. I think he was referring to the right tackle not lining up directly on the line, from looking at the picture you supplied.

Simms just got it wrong, the formation is fine.

Yeah, that formation is legal. Four people in the back-field, seven on the line of scrimmage.

Also if you notice the Ref on the far side is leaning to check the line, it was close but he was checking it out and they must have been on the line.
