OT- Sporting News sees possibly folly in Skins signing of Haynesworth
If you get Sporting News Today, they had a good article on Haynesworth. While they said they would jump on the bandwagon like everyone else and say it was a good signing, I posted here because they made some excellent points I had not thought of:
1. He's not worth the money -- Haynesworth deal is effectively a 3 year deal for $41M, given he is 8 years int he league he won't see the full 7 year contract, plus Skins jettison big signings pretty quickly (see Jason Taylor). It's a deal that is cap friendly to sever after year 3. Given that, he gets $800K per game if he plays all 48 games. Now, he has not done that since he rookie year in 2002. If you look at average games played, which is only 12 games per year, he gets paid $1.12MM per year. Sporting News says no DT has that kind of impact to a team. Keep in mind also if he plays as he has over the last six seasons, he will miss 12 games in those first 3 years - almost a full season.
2. He helps with their best strength, against the run, and doesn't help enough with their biggest weakness, pass rush -- Haynesworth is a run stopper. He is not an elite pass rusher (he had 8.5 sacks in his best year,, 2008). The Skins were in the top 10 in the league against the run last year already, ye they were last in the NFC in sacks with only 24. So will their run get that much better? Does he give them the help they need in a dismal pass rush? Probably no on both counts. Skins needed to sign an elite outside pass rusher, not a run stopper.
Interesting line of thinking...

he was a flashy signing, and that was exactly what Snyder wanted...I doubt ANY move the Redskins make is really smart when you break it down like that...Snyder just likes being the Yankees of the NFL...LOTS of payouts, little results in the postseason.

They look like the best team in the division on paper right now.
Haynesworth is a monster who will draw double blocks and still hold the line or get penetration. He not only stuffs the run he puts big hits on the QB. He puts big hits on the guys trying to block him. The Titans did not have a starting defender other than him over 300 pounds, but were able to hold the line and stuff the run as well as pressure the qb with a 4 man rush. All most all because of his pressure on the O line making sure he is not the one who makes the tackle.
They just went from a good defense to a great one.
The offense was on fire at times last year after a tough start, they led the NFL in rushing for almost half the year and have a very good skill group and decent O line they will be looking to improve in the draft.

It's amazing how little you know about football.
They look like the best team in that division on paper? Alright, we'll break down the posistions real quick.
QBs-McNabb, Eli, Romo and then Campbell (Skins are last)
RBs- Giants, Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles (Skins are third)
Defensive line- Giants, Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles (Skins are third)
WRs- Giants, Eagles, Skins, Cowboys (Honestly we'll just count this as a tie for them all)
Offensive line- Giants, Eagles, Skins, Cowboys (Skins are third)
Linebackers- Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Skins (Skins are forth)
Secondary- Eagles, Giants, Cowboys, Skins (Skins are forth)
They were the fourth best team in that division last year. Adding a three hundred pound lard-butt who won't play more than 75% of the defensive snaps is not going to improve things that much."A moron, a rapist, and a Pittsburgh Steeler walk into a bar. He sits down and says, “Hi I’m Ben may I have a drink please?”

okay so maybe their running defense gets a little better, they were already 5th in the league! if they had any edge rushers under the age of 35 they might get some pressure on the QB and be able to handle any of the teams in their division. their offense sucks-- campbell can't be counted on and portis fades when you need him. i also have no idea where you see them being the best team on paper in that division...
