Governor DeSantis and Ilk: Real Slaves Speak To Us

I didn't know he made the comment about blacks benefited from skills from slavery. I did some research and notice his parents came from southern Italy that was once occupied by the Moors from Africa. His descendants being attacked in New Orleans in the biggest lynching in American history. Now to the subject. This is a program that ran on National Television in 1963 and was designed to help teachers deal with prejudice. They used a written volume named Lay My Burden Down which was interviews of the last of the slaves.

Lay My Burden Down: A Folk History of Slavery:

In the 1930's, the last decade when many men and women who were born under slavery and freed by the Emancipation Proclamation still lived, the New Deal's Federal Writing Project made an extraordinary and important decision. It sent interviewers to ask these African-American survivors : What does it mean to be free? Even more, how does it feel?

In memory of Celia (1835-1855) 19 years old

Robert Newsom, a yeoman farmer (slave master), acquired approximately 14-year-old Celia, born around 1835, in Audrain County in 1850 to act as his concubine after his wife had died the previous year. Celia had three children, at least one of which was indisputably Robert Newsom's. Celia repeatedly requested, demanded, and threatened Newsom to stop sexually coercing her. On June 23, 1855, when Newsom came to her cabin that night, Celia struck Newsom twice with a large stick, killing him with the second blow. Sometime during Celia's incarceration, Celia delivered her third child. Celia killed Robert Newsom by accident in self-defense to stop Newsom from raping her, which was a controversial argument at the time. Celia was ultimately executed by hanging following a denied appeal in December 1855.

The offsprings of black women slaves raped by their slave masters called Mulattos. These kids were made into slaves because they were offsprings of a negro.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadroon Octoroons came from quadroons and so on. It getting down to the nitty gritty (rabbit hole). I didn't even know this!

The label “octoroon” actually told a story about the women it described: in it their fathers were always white, and the “black” (enslaved) mothers always got successively lighter, finally producing a white-looking “octoroon.” Even in spite of paternal wishes, their daughters remained in slavery, where their light skin added to their value in the sexual slave market. The octoroon often takes her own life rather than submit—hence the “tragedy.” The most famous abolitionist novel featured the “tragic octoroon” trope. The reader encounters Eliza through the eyes of a visiting slave trader. The first story in White’s compendium was that of the “tragic octoroon.” The word “octoroon” describes a person who is seven parts white, and one part black. The octoroon’s dormant black blood held the promise of intense, and forbidden, sex.[/b]
