I grew up in Montgomery, with a school about 50/50 black and white. Birthday parties, little league, everything was mixed because all of us had grown up together since kindergarten. Fred Beasley, from the 49ers, and I were good buddies who competed a lot.

Of course I moved to Cullman right before 7th grade. There was a sign on 278 that said Cullman is a sundown town complete with a picture of a burning cross. First time my mom and I drove by it both our heads did the slow motion turn and stare. I asked someone at the highschool, 1 black teacher and 1 black student in K-12 and the student was the teacher's son, where all the black people were. They all live in The Colony. I remember thinking what a racist ass thing to say until I learned that there is a small town near Hanceville named The Colony. And that is where all the black people lived.

Then there was my first meeting with the KKK junior klansmen. It was 7th grade and I was waiting for my mom to pick me up after practice when a couple of upperclassmen, whose dads were in the KKK, started asking questions. Where I'm from, did I have a girlfriend, was I a n-word-lover. That last one threw me but they... explained. I told 'em I my friends were pretty evenly split black and white which did not sit well. They wanted me to say the n-word which I refused and so got my ass pretty well beat. Mom wanted me to report them to the principal but I didn't. They got me a couple of more times, but nothing like that first one.

My senior year there was some KKK trouble. The only thing to do in Cullman was cruise the strip and some kids from Hanceville had the audacity to join in. KKK decides they're gonna be stupid because it's on brand. They were going to hit Cullman on Saturday night for a couple of weeks and be inbred assholes, I guess? I started hearing rumblings that some on the football team wanted to help keep Cullman pure. I stood up after practice and told them that I would be driving the strip those nights and anybody from the team I saw would be dealt with. Our coaches said anybody caught by me would be off the team.

Of course, now I have to share the story about my family. Day I leave for college, my mom says, "Son, you never cared about race. Now you know we live in a pretty racist area and people talk but if you brink home an indian girl, or a black girl we will love them as much as you do. Bring home a yankee and I'll shoot you."

Cullman has improved a lot since then. A classmate who was KKK adjacent has put aside his hate and become a preacher.
