Ravens Report from the Left Coast: Ravens vs. Chargers

Okay, friends, here are my observations while watching our Ravens in LA.

The tailgaters were surprisingly great considering the move of the Chargers, BBQ, a lot of Spanish-themed cooking, and live bands! DJs, and many colorful characters. More than I ever saw at any Ravens game, people are selling stuff everywhere. Swag, beer, and liquor are no-holds-barred near the gate. My wife and I now have a running joke as one of the Asian vendors pushing her hot dogs was shouting, "Doh Hogs!"

The stadium? Amazing. If you ever get a chance, this is the gold standard of the stadium, unreal in every way imaginable. The view, the screens, the food, and the bathrooms were so nice and clean you could keep a Philly fan out just because it wasn't dirty enough for them.

Getting in and out of the parking lot was pretty easy; I had never parked closer to a stadium, partly because my wife has a handicap placard, but that also meant being one of the last to get out of the parking lots. We were held up as the Ravens bus passed us with a police escort to get them to the airport, a 10-minute drive from the stadium.

The fans, I swear, felt like a 2 to 1 ratio of Ravens fans. Baltimore needs to drop the "woe is us." I mean, so many fans were from Baltimore, yet many fans were locals who love the Ravens and Lamar Jackson. I am not saying they are the Dallas Cowboys, but they have a national brand growing. The Chargers fans themselves? It was very cool, had a super nice fanbase, and virtually everyone was great. There was a Charger fan taunting our section, who were mostly Raven fans, joking about our defense chant, then the Ravens crushed the Chargers a few plays later, and he shut up. As we left the stadium, the Charger fans chanted, "Fire Staley!"

As for the game itself, I will be less critical of Harbaugh and put myself in the Chargers fan's place. The Chargers played hard; they have a lot of talent on that team, and it showed. They were scrappy and tough.

Now, your Baltimore Ravens? I was amazed at the size of Pierce, a massive human being. Also, Ricard, I LOL'd when the Charger fan was asking me; I said, yeah, that is the Fullback, 310-320lbs!

The whole team seemed much more fluid than I recall, as I hadn't been to a game in 6 years. Let me tell you, I was on the nearside where Zay Flowers had his two touchdowns. That guy is beyond fast. That last touchdown was like, oh good, a first down. A second later, he is in the endzone. My goodness, he is a special player! Lamar was also like he was on a different plane of existence on the field. Tucker is worrisome, he didn't look right in warmups. I don't know if he is hurt, but I watched him throw the football tee like he was pissed.

All in all, a great experience.

    Great report! I concur!

Stadium is AMAZING! High tech, huge screens, clean, easy to navigate and plenty of space. Our seats had a great view (200 level row 1). Didnít look to be a bad seat in the house though. For all the reports I heard of how long it takes to leave it was surprisingly easy. 20 minutes tops to exit. We arrived 3.5 hours prior to start to enjoy the day so arriving was super easy.

I was shocked at the amount of Ravens fans in attendance. Chargers fans around us were joking that there were more purple jerseys.

The stadium seemed to go overboard in my opinion getting Chargers fans to make noise. But, I canít blame them. At times you could hear a pin drop when Lamar was running the offense. On that note, the stadium billboard lights circling the stadium was blinking while the Ravens offense was on the field. Surprised thatís allowed.

Now my one not so good thing. A group was openly smoking marijuana close to our section and stadium security didnít seem to care. They just flicked their joints over the side when done. I guess to bad for the people below. The smell got worse in the second half. The stadium announces no smoking or vaping but clearly itís not enforced.

Aside from that it was a great visit! At the airport as I type this.

And for the record, so glad Zay ran into the end zone on the last play! Yea I get the football aspect of it, But it was exciting!

Damn, that happened in my section! 202, bro just flicked his joint off the top. I forgot to add that footnote. And you were right, the light show often did seem to go well into the Ravens possession.

Re: Ravens Report from the Left Coast: Ravens vs. Chargers

I just saw this thread - and I replied in the game thread but, my "take" on the game is as follows:

    Went to the game.

There were just as many Ravens jerseys there as Chargers; in fact at times, it seemed as if there were more. There were more Ravens fans than Charger fans surrounding me [when I sat in section 504 and also when I moved at halftime down to section 301] They must like the team; because I doubt they're from the Baltimore metropolitan region. [People born in Baltimore pretty much stay in Baltimore, it's a very parochial in that sense, which isn't a criticism... some go down to Florida, yes... but not many migrate west to live and die in LA. I did. Having said that, let me clarify, I was born in Baltimore City and grew up with Boog, Brooks, Johnny U, Wes Unseld, Hopkins lacrosse, etc... most of my narrative was spent in B-more and being active in the community, so to speak; so it's why I feel comfortable editorializing about it.] Anyway - I was surprised to see so many Jackson jerseys and Ed Reed jerseys [some Ray, few Flacco and Tucker]. I'm on the shuttle bus, and there's these young Latin women adorning Ravens apparel - I was like- Right On!

Besides being a traditionally underachieving organization - the Chargers are also a rather moribund one. They've had Fouts, Rivers [who I believe never missed a game], and now Herbert - it won't matter. The issue with the Chargers is the owner - he's cheap, like Mike Brown of the Bengals. There's no Charger Vibe around LA - it's all contrived. The Charger "fans" were more phony than fanatical - this contrasts with the Rams fan base who genuinely are into the team. It's still a Raiders town. More Raider fans here than Rams fans and certainly the manufactured Chargers supporters.

I went to the Ravens vs Rams game on 11/25/19 at the Colosseum, and that was cool - not only to watch us run a clinic on the Rams [though Skura busted his knee in that game - and up to that point he was playing well] - but it was also cool to watch an NFL game in that ancient venue... As for Sofi Stadium is concerned - it's a behemoth structure and not a bad seat in the house, no long lines for the bathroom, it's what you would expect... it's ready for the Olympics.

The game - of course I went with a Charger fan - and a Raider fan. The Charger fan thought the game was indicative of the Chargers as a whole, close but no cigar. The Raider fan periodically would complain about the incompetence of Mark Davis. Both were jealous of the stable franchise the Ravens have become. We have a good owner, a decent coach, a solid GM, a legitimate identity with a cool mascot, the Raven [- the only literary reference mascot in all major league sports!] - so, as Thanksgiving weekend winded down on Sunday night - I was thankful for that. Here I was, sitting with two California natives bitching about their dysfunction teams, enjoying the Raven's win. Though awkward at times - on offense - the Ravens are: 9 and 3. Nice.

The female DJ playing the electric violin was pretty cool!

@Cheap Cheese, is the 500 level as high as it looks? We sat in 200 level but only made it as high as 300.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Captain Silver again.
Thanks Capt'n, enjoyed the insight reporting!

Harbs mentioned not getting replays an the screen in time to make challenges, but he did challenge the lateral becase he saw it was close and took a chance.

I believe it. Lots of #8 jerseys in LA plus the biggest cheer when Lamar came out for warmups.

Has NFL relaxed some rules around what the home teams can do this year? Maybe it's just me but I felt that this year sometimes teh Ravens PA announcer/music goes on a little bit longer into the visitors possession.

Btw, great posts, guys. Thanks for sharing.

That's something that some national people do get, and some don't.

Those old Pro-Browns, Anti-Ravens people are slowly fading away.
