    OT: D-Day

    Never forget!

    Lyrics:

In the gloom the gathering storm abates
In the ships gimlet eyes await
The call to arms to hammer at the gates
To blow them wide throw evil to its fate
All summers long the drills to build the machine
To turn men from flesh and blood to steel
From paper soldiers to bodies on the beach
From summer sands to armageddon's reach
Overlord, your master not your god
The enemy coast dawning grey with scud
These wretched souls puking, shaking fear
To take a bullet for those who sent them here
The world's alight, the cliffs erupt in flame
    No escape, remorseless shrapnel rains
Drowning men no chance for a warrior's fate
A choking death enter hell's gates

Sliding we go, only fear on our side
To the edge of the wire
And we rush with the tide
    Oh the water is red
With the blood of the dead
    But I'm still alive
    Pray to God I survive

How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through

The rising dead, faces bloated torn
They are relieved, the living wait their turn
Your number's up, the bullet's got your name
You still go on, to hell and back again
Valhalla waits, valkyries rise and fall
The warrior tombs, lie open for us all
A ghostly hand reaches through the veil
Blood and sand, we will prevail

Sliding we go, only fear on our side
To the edge of the wire
And we rush with the tide
    Oh the water is red
With the blood of the dead
    But I'm still alive
    Pray to God I survive

How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through

Operation Overlord. Perhaps the best named military operation ever.

Truly changed the war. T’was the beginning of the end for the Axis.

Fucken' eh! A defining moment in my life was standing on that beach. Far more intimidating than going to a Civil War battle ground. When you look up at those cliffs from the beach, your heart sinks as you picture yourself in that situation. Meat grinder.

But Overlord is the best goddamn name, I agree.

    Captain,

No doubt, I was nearby years ago with a coworker (Army Veteran). We took a little absence to go to the cemetery and beach. Standing there, looking up, that was terrifying, knowing what lay ahead of you, if you even made it that far.

My grandad was a WW2 vet. He was a Marine in the Pacific. As much hell as he saw with the Japanese …he always spoke highly of the men who fought on DDay. Said he couldn’t imagine what that landing was like.

Indeed BC. GIJoe definitely gave all to save people he didn’t even know.

Sadly a truly different generation and time. Men lied about their ages to go to fight in WW2. I’m afraid today’s generation would run to Mexico at the mere thought of giving their life for a stranger.

A breed apart. We will never see the likes of them again.

Respect to all who gave their lives to fight fascism. We'd do well to remember them and their fight!

French underground, fighting to regain their homeland, set the stage for the Allies. BUT the most important prerequisite was four years earlier: The Battle of Britain. Against tremendous odds, Great Britain survived by repelling the Luftwaffe (German Air Force). If Hitler had conquered the British Isles, there’s NO launch point for the invasion. THAT was the most important battle of the twentieth century.
