Re: Free talk Friday - 06.02.23
When our youngest came out as gay, we believed it was okay to support them, and even encourage the community to make them feel supported and valued so they maintain pride in themselves, despite the way some people can make queer people feel.
It's a rough road for them at times. Middle school can be a very mean spirited place, full of kids whose parents must be filling their heads with all sorts of hateful ideas about gay people. Afterall, where else would these kids get these horrible thoughts that allow them with a clear conscience treat gay people so inhumanely?
Maybe you didn't make it to middle school, and wouldn't know, but it can be a treacherous place for kids who are different, through no fault of their own, but who are treated as some sort of political poser outcasts making immoral choices. Sometimes it's nice for them to know that not everyone shares the same despicable attitudes as the loudest loudmouths.
It's funny how far some people will go make convoluted arguments about morality to justify their bigotry the minute the "gay" topic comes up.
Not to worry though, we're doing okay and so far my wife and I have resisted the urge to force hormone blockers down our child's throat. We like to keep an open mind. The difference between gay and trans can be so confusing, as I'm sure you know."That's what."

I dont know where your kid goes to school, but nowadays (at least around here anyway) gay kids are ‘cool’ and actually quite popular. At the local high school the head majorette is a gay black man and is one of the most popular kids in school, even getting voted homecoming king.

Just like this board, you'll still find different types of people in any middle school.
That definitely includes a lot of enlightened, supportive, compassionate people... and that helps, truly, no question.
But not everyone. There are still plenty of shitty people who get upset when a gay person receives positive attention, because they didn't earn it, and who will generally troll supporters of gay rights or gay pride as being 'woke' posers... in the most derisive sense.
So while it's true that middle school attitudes have shifted since I was a kid, and there are people who will embrace Pride Month as a show of support, believe me, there are still plenty of shitheads who very vocally belittle and shout negative thoughts about anything-gay-related.
Just as there are still racists in this world who find out about some black cause and their first thought is, but what about me?"That's what."

When my kid came out as a Panthers fan, I continued to love and support him because that's what parents do.
Hey, I think there's someone over yonder who doesn't know how virtuous we are for loving and supporting our kids. Maybe we should figure out a way of signaling it to them?"A moron, a rapist, and a Pittsburgh Steeler walk into a bar. He sits down and says, “Hi I’m Ben may I have a drink please?”
