John Unitas was the closest thing to Jesus on earth in my house growing up......I am named after him. My father passed away before John, good thing too......it would have killed him.

He's like if Drew Bledsoe led his team to two titles instead of riding the bench for one.

Troy Aikman? There's a case to be made he's the worst, though personally I go with Joe Namath.
    Namath and it isn't close.

    Namath is all marketing.

    True.

    Like I said, marketing.

Career Namath didn't have the longevity that we think of with modern HOF QBs. He only had a couplefew full seasons after age 26 (though one of them was very damn good: 2nd-team All-Pro & 3rd in MVP balloting in 1972).

I think that explains the discrepancy in perception. People look at his career numbers and go, that doesn't look like a HOFer – and they're right. The Hall voters looked at his peak accomplishments and declared him a HOFer; and I think they're right too.
Eh, Flacco's peak was more impressive.

    Brutal sport back then.
Namath can’t be judged outside of the radical Woodstock era counter-culture decade of the 60’s. He had a renegade personality that resonated with young fans choosing Laugh-In over Gunsmoke, Mod Squad over The FBI. I could go on. You get the point.
And as you said RWT, it was that guaranteed SB win over the old school NFL that sealed it. Namath isn’t Namath in the 80’s in any city not NY.

Maybe: I'd be interested to see what era-adjusted stats sat about that.

Namath's 1967 season is still the Jets single-season record for passing yards, 55 years later. That's absurd. 14-game season and all. Yeah, it was the AFL. But other teams & players were in the AFL: Raiders, Dolphins, Chargers; Daryle Lamonica, Len Dawson, Bob Griese; Lance Allworth, Fred Biletnikoff.

    Namath was more than marketing.

I had forgotten about them. Thanks, Jim. You managed to shake loose a couple cobwebs in the ol' cranial cavity.

We will have to agree to disagree on his on-field value, and that's fine.

As for him holding the Jets single-season QB record for passing yards, that speaks more about how much the Jets have sucked at QB than it does about Namath. Without looking I guess Pennington would be second, or maybe Favre?

As I typed that I realized that our pre-Flacco years really weren't that bad in comparison to that swath of suck.

Oh, there was that one guy they had in the 80s that had a shootout with Marino.

Fitzpatrick, O'Brien, Vinny. Favre shows up in 8th, Pennington 11th.

Ken O'Brien made the Pro Bowl twice, interesting

I remember him being one of the "other" QBs from the famous 1983 draft class.

Pretty sure he's the one that had the shoot out with Marino.
