A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the region of ignorance that tyranny begins. - Benjamin Franklin

Re: Ravens OTAs underway
Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

Jeff Z on position battles https://theathletic.com/4591756/2023...ampaign=601983
Starting left guard
The competitors: Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu, Ben Cleveland, Daniel Faalele, Patrick Mekari, John Simpson
The favorites: Cleveland, Simpson
How it may play out: Ravens coach John Harbaugh has said that Aumavae-Laulu, a rookie sixth-rounder, would likely get reps at tackle and guard this summer, so you could probably cross him off the list of legitimate competitors. Harbaugh maintains that Faalele is a legitimate starting candidate, but the 2022 fourth-round selection is a natural tackle and it seems unlikely Baltimore would mess with his development by asking him to move inside. Then there’s Mekari, who is extremely valuable in the sixth offensive lineman role with the ability to enter the game and perform solidly at every spot. That pretty much leaves Cleveland and Simpson. The former is a 2021 third-round pick who has been a disappointment. Cleveland’s struggled to stay on the field and practice consistently well. The latter was a 2020 fourth-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders who started 21 games but was let go last season. Simpson has generated a lot of praise around the building and figures to get a long look. At last week’s OTAs, the Ravens had Faalele at left guard and Cleveland at right tackle. Afterward, Harbaugh said he expects “quite a fight” for the left guard job.

Really would be nice for Cleveland to knock it out of the park at LG.
