I don't really get the dislike for James Urban if he ends up being The Ravens OC. It's like we have this belief that Urban would run a similar offense to Greg Romans or is a Roman clone and not bring any fresh ideas when that probably most likely isn't true. The guy has worked under Andy Reid, Hue Jacksons, and Jay Gruden throughout his coaching career. Ideally if he could marry the passing concepts he has learned from all of them and what he has learned from Roman when it comes to the run game then sounds like great hire to me.

The issue I have with Urban is that we haven't seen any improvement with Lamar since 2019. The same passing issues are still there. Even this past season when Lamar worked all Summer to get in the best shape of his life and focused on mechanics didn't produce any improvements. It could be that this is just Lamar and it is what it is. It could also be that Urban just isn't able to get through to him and isn't really an effective coach. Honestly I might move him back to WR coach once this is all settled and try someone new at QB coach if Lamar stays. The improvements for the QBs just haven't been there under Urban

The Ravens have interviewed a bunch of QB coaches for their OC position. Has any other team interviewed Urban? I don’t think so. None of the Ravens offensive coaches are in demand and for good reason.

Lamar has definitely improved since 2019, lmao. He’s throwing outside the numbers and reading defenses waaaaaaay better. The problem is that he outgrew the offense after 2020 and there was no further evolution of the offensive scheme. It was stale and way too remedial for him.

Did he really work on mechanics? If he did it was with his personal QB coach. Mechanics are about repetition. Poor mechanics are an indictment of Lamar and not Urban. Players on all levels of all sports need to focus on mechanics away from team practices.

Not only that but Lamar brought along his "personal QB coach" to training camp. Another example of Lamar making it about himself. I think we have seen the same thing happen with Lamar over the last few seasons. He's worked with specialist during the off season and when he comes in to camp.....and the first few weeks of the season we see a market improvement. But it doesn't take long before we see the same bad habits we have always seen emerge. Bad mechanics.....bad footwork. How quickly did we forget that Jackson was the AFC offensive player of the month at the beginning of the season. What's more notable about that is that he didn't have his top LT playing or his top running backs. Basically the same WRs. SO what was different after that first month?

Lamar was different. As the season progressed the team around him actually improved....except for the all important WR's. Bateman went down along with Duvernay. But did those two really play a huge part in the passing game the first month?

This is the thing that other teams would be looking at to acquire Jackson.....so if you are thinking about trading for him. He has bad mechanics at times, bad footwork, he will need top receivers, a NFL style of a passing scheme, a competent O line, a decent run game.....because we can't run him in to the ground....he can't be our only rushing threat. $250 million guaranteed contract and a couple of first round picks and a few other picks....maybe a player or two. THEN!!!!!!!!! just maybe Jackson will win a few games more and get our team over the hump......really? Of course that's if he stays healthy......oh BTW we might have to put up with some immature behavior. Well hell.....sign me up!

So…. That’s because you have my take backwards.
If we were going with an internal candidate, I’d prefer to have just kept Roman. The WHOLE point of canning Roman is to start over, burn it down and start fresh.
Why promote the QB coach that couldn’t get Lamar’s footwork correct in 5 years of coaching?
Similarly with Tee Martin, if he couldn’t get any progress at all from Proche or Wallace, etc than what makes us think they could run a whole offense.

Where people may think Roman was bad at his job, I think the QB and WR assistants have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt they were atrocious at theirs… so no, I don’t feel a promotion is in store.

Let’s get someone from outside, and retain as few as possible position coaches. I’m good with Keeping D’alledandris, and Godsey. I’d rather let Kerry Dixon stick around than Urban.
