Re: 538 article on Ravens pre-snap motion
I'm surprised they're only fifth in number of delay of game penalties. Even more surprised Green Bay is the worst.
Also, we have talked about converting the offense more to a Shanahan style - wouldn't you know, #s 2 and 3 on number of pre snap motions are the Rams and 49ers. Would like to know what San Francisco is doing differently because Sean McVay is struggling just as much as Greg Roman with delays.
Looking at play-clock data, we see at least some evidence for this explanation. There’s a weak negative correlation between a team’s number of plays with motion at the snap and how much time it tends to leave on the play clock.2 But that general finding doesn’t explain the difference between the Ravens and the Niners. On plays with motion since 2017, the Ravens have snapped the ball with about as much time left on the play clock as the Niners (8.3 seconds vs. 8.1 seconds on average), according to Pro Football Focus. In other words, while teams that run motion tend to let the clock wind down further, somehow San Francisco was penalized 15 fewer times than the Ravens while Baltimore snapped the ball 0.2 seconds quicker, on average.3 It’s a deeply weird result that reeks of Shanahan dark magic.

Pre-snap motion tends to be far more beneficial to the run than the pass. Which is why analysts have a history of initial praising Roman for it.

If you aren't breaking the huddle until there are 10 seconds or less on the play clock - you DON"T HAVB TIME to run pre-snap motion.

Guys….sigh…this is not rocket science we are over complicating this sport with all this mumbo jumbo it’s very simple…do
Your job, if you do your job then you will always know where you need to be and what package you need to be in when the play is called….it also helps when the coaches including the head coach knows the plays, present on the sidelines and have guys numbers called and standing ready switch out when the play is called, it’s called preparation …sigh…this used to be an easy sport

And? So we have offensive problems-planning, organizing, scheming, timing, adjustments, utilization, etc. This is getting old. It all comes back to coaching or lack of.
Enough said. We know what needs to be done. After the season, MAKE THAT CHANGE.
