Re: *files missing persons report for Odafe Oweh*
I'm really disappointed with Oweh so far, I also thought he was going to break out this year.

Re: *files missing persons report for Odafe Oweh*
This is exactly what I thought would happen to Oweh without Bowser or Ojabo. Houston isn't enough to take attention off him. Oweh isn't that good to get it done without others. Great athletes don't automatically mean great football players. I don't know if any of you got to see the Lions game but if see the highlights watch Aiden Hutchinson. That's was a dominant pass rusher looks like.
We've had those here in the past in Suggs, Boulware, Dumervil and McCrary. Oweh is more of the ZaDarius Smith, Pernell McPhee, Matt Judon, Paul Kruger level. That second group were all good but they couldn't pressure without help.

Here's an EZ angle of all of Oweh's dropback snaps against MIA. I'm curious to hear what people with pass rushing knowledge see in the film (particularly if there are specific examples!). Here's a link for 99's dropback snaps against NYJ as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97s1qHQPY90

Re: *files missing persons report for Odafe Oweh*
I saw a stat that said he is near the highest in the league at being double teamed. More that Watt or Garrett. Anyone have anything on this?
Travis playing this week would be very nice

Re: *files missing persons report for Odafe Oweh*
It's alot worse than i initially thought. Here are my takeaways.
1. He gets off the snap extremely slow. To be such an athletic freak he is always a half second behind after the snap. That half second allows the Tackle to plant his feet and get in good position for the block.
2. Macdonald is a moron. Way to often he lines him up WAYYY TO FUCKING WIDE. How the hell is he going to get to the QB lined up so fucking wide. Who does that in 2023? The fuck is he running.
3. Oweh rushes like he is in PeeWee league. Bull rush, bull rush, bull rush. There were a few double teams, and almost everytime he goes inside to get double teamed instead of taking outside in order to avoid getting double teamed.
4. He bites so hard on fakes and Play actions it's crazy.
5. Some of those plays like at 3:00 he is just a lazy sack of shit. piss poor effort. At least 3 plays I saw piss poor effort and no motor.
IMO he looks like Queen at pass rush. No skills, no IQ, just out there. Then Macdonald makes it worse by playing him so wide that it would take 10 minutes for him to even get to the QB.
I guess you can't just blame Macdonald, but Oweh should be looking to swim inside the tackle when lined up that wide not bull rush.
He is a bust.

Re: *files missing persons report for Odafe Oweh*
I've gone through the MIA film. I feel like I know basically nothing about pass rushing, so my charting was relatively simple.
First, Oweh faced 44 dropbacks against MIA; he rushed the passer on 38 of those (I excluded a play where he jammed a TE, spied Tua for a beat, then blitzed; this was the Tua spin move TD).
I had the Ball Out Quickly* on 17 of those 44 dropbacks (including 2 plays where Oweh did not rush). I saw some form of double team (any time that two players blocked Odafe on the same play, not necessarily simultaneously) on 11 of 38 rushes. That's a higher proportion than I expected (note that ESPN has him getting doubled roughly 20% of the time on the season).
If I ignore snaps where he was double teamed (tough to expect any player to win there) or where the ball came out quickly, I'm left with 13 rushes. 4 of these were rollouts (3 away, 1 toward). He crashed hard on the boot toward him and had no chance to recover to get near Tua or to cover the receiver that came with him (Q2, 10:44).
On the 9 remaining rush snaps, he was solo blocked the the LT (2), LG (1), RG (2), RT (2), TE (1), and came unblocked once. I have no notes on any moves he made. Notes that I do have:
- (Q2, 07:03) Oweh is very slow/lackadaisical on his stunt; unrelated to rushing the passer, but his inability to fall on the football to recover it is slightly comical (only because it was not a live ball)
- (Q3, 03:02) Almost gets a free run at Tua due to stunt; decent recovery from RT (#75) to direct Madubuike to close down Oweh's lane and spring Tua outside
- (Q3, 00:26) Odd hesitation, but good dip to get around pulling LG (I guess I do have one note on his moves). Might get to QB without hesitation.
- (Q4, 13:35) After navigating the releasing WR (#11), Oweh forces TE (#88) to hold, which goes unflagged, and still gets pressure on the QB
Regarding the uncalled hold, Oweh got away with illegal hands to the face at least twice from what I saw: (Q2, 07:48) and (Q4, 13:00), so he should still be thankful for the lack of yellow on the field. I imagine the Ravens OL got away with some flagrant holds as well.
All in all, I wouldn't say I was impressed by what I saw, but the film wasn't as bad as I first thought. The lack of moves and/or a plan is concerning; I'd like to see more from #99, even if he is still quite raw. I was disappointed in his effort on occasion (e.g. (Q2, 07:03) mentioned above), which I simply can't accept from a player like him. Still, he drew a ton of attention (nearly every double for him should grant his opposite edge rusher a 1v1), and MIA did a great job getting the ball out early on most dropbacks. I hope to look back on this in a few months and wonder how we ever doubted the young man.
* - I was not very strict with my definition of Ball Out Quickly and determined mostly by "feel" rather than any specific timing. I'd like to make it more rigorous in the future.Shared Google Folder with Ravens spreadsheets, nextGen charts, and more! Please share my content! (attribution to Twitter requested)

Re: *files missing persons report for Odafe Oweh*
Not seeing more than Garrett (and Watt only has the one game to look at), but he is being double teamed quite often per ESPN (note that I don't believe they actually watch any film to calculate these).

Re: *files missing persons report for Odafe Oweh*
I think it might also be relevant that Oweh was drafted by and for a different DC than the current one. Using him as a traditional DE wastes his best attributes, he needs to be out in space and blitzing from different entry points or acting as a spy. With his range and acceleration he will run down any attempts by the QB to break contain and he can feature on stunts and delayed blitzes. Currently injuries necessitate that he plays DE but I'm hopeful that will change soon. His current situation reminds me of what happened with Adalius Thomas once he left Baltimore
