Smile Re: Super Bowl XXXV & the almost shutout

IMO the 2000 Ravens were the best NFL defense ever. Led by Marvin Lewis, and Ray Lewis, I believe they gave up the least points-per-game than any team in history. I watched that game here in NYC with 6 Giants fans, 3 Jets fans, and little old me. It was one of the highlights of my sporting life :

Man, offense, defense, and return game... Bc

As far the shutout, yeah it would have been nice, but maybe if the Gmen dont score that return, JLew doesn't get to put the DAGGER in the next play.

What bothers me more is all the turnovers we actually LEFT on the field.

We picked Collins 4 times but could easily have had 4 more plus another fumble recovery at the goal line.

I was at that Super Bowl and the Ravens probably win 49-0 with a competent QB performance that day. Trent Dilfer did not have a good game and was missing on passes the entire game. Dilfer even threw a pick six that got called back on a defensive holding penalty that was honestly a bit suspect.

Just a decent game manager performance from Dilfer and that game is over at halftime.

The defense still posted a shutout...

That distinction is what we still share with the 1972 Dolphins defense. They also missed a shutout because of special teams. K Garo Yepremian tried to spike a blocked kick (he reverted to soccer rules) before it was picked up and ran in for a TD by Washington.

    Bc,

Correct for 16-game season history (10.31 per game), but not for 14-game seasons:

1968 Baltimore Colts, 144 points (10.29 per game)
1969 Minnesota Vikings, 140 points (10.00 per game)
1977 Atlanta Falcons, 129 points (9.21 per game).

But none won the Super Bowl.

Ironically, the 2000 Tennessee Titans are 2nd in points per game for a 16 game season giving up 11.9. The Ravens gave up 10.3.

I was about to bring that up. IIRC that was a couple of plays before the TD toss to Stokely and actually would have put the Army Ants* ahead...
