    OT: Happy 4th of July!

What is everyone up to? I am staying home, cooking burgers and dogs with corn for me and the missus…

The best movie about this holiday is “1776” (1972). I dismissed watching it for years because musicals ‘are not my bag’. It was a mistake. It is really an historical drama - a very, very good one. I learned more about the event than from any other source.

It provides keen insight into who the men of the Second Continental Congress really were - their pet peeves, their arguments, their motivations. They were a disparate group of practical men who mostly didn’t recognize the need for independence - despite the fact that General Washington was already engaged on the battlefield against overwhelming odds.

It has humor and sadness and it still holds up as entertainment. For the most part, the music sets the mood of the times. And it even accentuates the drama.

If there is something you could call a man’s musical, this is it (only two women in it). The other one is “Paint Your Wagon” (1969).

I strongly recommend “1776” as both an educational and illuminating film.

We went to the Washington Nationals game which reminded me of an O’s game and am now at home watching the O’s on tv and having dinner. Plan to watch fireworks on tv.

My youngest turned 5 today. Took her to play mini golf, then let the kids do the craft her sister bought her (kit with three dinosaur skeletons, and clay to build the dinosaurs around them) followed by a water balloon fight she's literally been waiting months for, and swimming.

Burgers and dogs tonight because she wants a hot dog for dinner. Whatever fireworks are going on in my neighborhood tonight.

Order from Redner's! I do make my own though, buttermilk with hot sauce, flour, cornstarch, corn meal, rice flour and a blend of spices. Corn starch and rice flour give it a nice crunch.
