The confusion comes with the terminology. Stanley and Boyle are not on IR - they are on the active PUP list (Physically Unable to Perform). Players who start training camp on the active PUP list can come off the list at any time. If players are still injured by the beginning of the season, they are moved to the reserve PUP list and are ineligible to play for six weeks. They do not count against the 53-man roster. If a player gets injured during raining camp, they can go on IR, but they would be unable to return for the season. The exception is players can be put on the IR/deignated to return, but in order to get that designation they have to be on the 53-man roster when the season begins.

At least that's how I understand it.

??? Stanley and Boyle aren't on IR. They are on PUP and have to come off before the 53 or they'll be out for at least 6 weeks of the season.

they just signed him a few days ago but sounds like he didn't think he would be given a real shot so he retired...

This is proof that it is. They will be lucky to win 3-4 games at this point.

I'm one of those people. It's not that it isn't real, it's that it doesn't matter until the team decides that it does. A HOF QB retiring is as good a time as any to clear out a roster.
