    Re: Ravens sign Ja'waun James

smart signing - cost virtually zero and this cat could be the starting RT in 2022. worth a gamble when it costs so little

    Vill at RT this year.
James at RT next year with Vill as swing tackle?

Def some level of 4d chess going on here with EDC...maybe playing a long con to have an over-abundance of tackle talent that he can parlay into trades for players or draft picks? Or liked the idea of getting a top tackle on the cheap?

That also means Phillips is staying at guard

Saves 6M next year if cut before 5th day of 2022 league year

So potentially 17M for Villaneava this year and James next year, or 6M more with AV as a swing tackle next year

I don't think that's right. If I read the terms right, it would be 8 mill for this year and then a 3.5 mill dead cap charge next year.

    $6.5M signing bonus
    $8M guaranteed (bonus & 2021 base salary)

    2021: $1.5M base ($4.75M cap)
    2022: $4M base* ($9.25M cap)

*$2M bonus if on roster on 5th day of 2022 league year

From the looks of the numbers of the contract, it would seem that in reality, Villanueva may only be with Baltimore for one season. The Ravens can let him go with just $3.5 million in dead cap space if he’s not on their roster on the fifth day of the 2022 league year. However, if he performs extremely well in 2021, the team could opt to bring him back if they feel like he can continue to play at that level.

So in essence, EDC looks to keep investing around 8 mill a year for upper level talent at RT.

    Brilliant move, EDC !
If either Stanley or Villanueva get hurt next year (small chance they could PUP him & have him on the roster late this season), there's an in-house viable option. Beats guys like Phillips or James Hurst or Mekari sliding out to tackle for a deep playoff run. I'd rather have 3 healthy, good OT's than only 2. Hell.....most teams only have 1. Opportunistic signing & great depth move for next season. As always, the more good players you have, the more creative you can be - and a trade to a tackle needy team could bring in a haul of picks if they're desperate enough.

Says in your post 4.75M cap hit this year then half the signing bonus or 3.25M dead money next year that’s how it works
