I read that too. That first sack is going to be a huge sigh of relief from most of the fans. Hopefully it comes early in the season

I'm not sure what you are arguing about. I agree that they probably drafted him over other edge rushers available because he had a higher floor and ceiling. Higher floor because of his ability to stop the run and ceiling because of his pass rush potential. My statement was that I wanted to hear more about his pass rush because that is his highest learning curve.

Decosta had compared the talent of high 2nd round pick Upshaw, who they believed would set an edge, and Oweh. I think he said Oweh could set an edge as well but there was “light years” difference in talent.

Speaking as an edge-setting connoisseur, Upshaw was freaking awesome at setting the edge. He manhandled tight ends and didn't just “set” the edge - he compressed the edge. He would shrink the whole of running room for the running back and would violently jerk back TEs and linemen. With Suggs on the other side it was HARD to run on that team. I still miss that (but not his complete inability to rush the passer and the way TEs would make first downs at will when they forced him into coverage). The way Wink is talking has me excited.

Oweh is not Upshaw rushing the passer. Looking at the replays Oweh is a completely different kind of beast.

Upshaw was country strong but just not athletic enough to become that every down edge rusher in the NFL. He was a Jarret Johnson replacement but wasn't even as athletic as JJ. JJ could actually drop back into coverage and was a better pass rusher than Upshaw was.

Thought this was an interesting nugget from an article on The Athletic by Jeff Z -

"Harbaugh spent a good bit of time after one play working one-on-one with rookie first-round pick Odafe Oweh and demonstrating the linebacker dropping in coverage. A few plays later, Odafe stayed with running back Ty’Son Williams on a wheel route and knocked away a Tyler Huntley pass down the far sideline. Oweh is a work in progress, but the coaching staff has been very pleased with his work ethic and how he takes to instruction."

I think the Ravens wanted more than just a pass-rush specialist with their second 1st round pick. I think they targeted Odafe because he was coachable and seems destined to be able to do all the other OLB things well...and oh yeah, can also rush the passer. If he winds up as Suggs Lite, meaning he can get TFLs and set the edge as well as cover, but only winds up with a fraction of the sack production. I'd be happy with it.

**Jeff Z's observation dovetails perfectly with what Tony also reported in his OTA update - "Fellow rookie OLB Odafe Oweh was impressive. He beat his man off the edge to blow up a misdirection play that would have resulted in a sack of Lamar in game conditions. Earlier Oweh was caught in a one-on-one assignment with RB Ty’Son Williams but stayed stride for stride with Williams down the left sideline, eventually breaking up the pass from Huntley who placed the ball perfectly, but the coverage was that good."

I liked the added detail about Harbs coaching him up and then Oweh translating that coaching into action.

Commented about that weeks ago....his speed and versility in coverage/setting the edge means unpredictability on defense in any given formation Don't know who is rushing, blocking spying etc

The first few pages of this thread are a work of art. Surface level simpletons galore. Goes to show how the “analytics nerds” in our front office stay ahead of the curve. Turns out sack totals are a function of how long the defense can maintain tight coverage, who knew.

This is the player we've been missing..... the big weapon on the defense that other teams are afraid of..... Changes the whole dynamic of the defense

ESPN just put out their way too early mock draft:

Chop Robinson, DE, Penn State

A transfer from Maryland, Robinson had a good 2022 season despite no sack production. He didn't start a game for the Nittany Lions but still accumulated 13.5 tackles for loss and 26 pressures. Baltimore needs more playmaking pass-rushers, and Robinson could be a good fit. But I also think the Ravens could consider cornerbacks or defensive tackles if those holes go unfixed by next April.
