Re: Welcome to Baltimore Rashod Bateman!
There's an article on The Athletic on Favorite Scheme and Player Fits From The 2021 Draft
Bateman makes this guy's Top 10 -
7. Rashod Bateman, WR, Baltimore Ravens (No. 27)
Play style: True X receiver who can beat press coverage and an excellent route runner who can get the ball with physicality.
Scheme: Run option system that uses downfield pass concepts.
The Ravens have been searching for a true X receiver who can beat press coverage and make contested catches for quarterback Lamar Jackson. In 2019, they drafted Miles Boykin out of Notre Dame in the third round, but he’s produced less than 500 total yards in his first two seasons combined. Midway through last season, they signed Dez Bryant, who hadn’t played in two years, and he caught six passes in six games. This offseason, they signed Sammy Watkins, who has battled through various injuries throughout his career, and it’s hard to trust he’ll be available for a full 17-game season.
The Ravens offense is predicated on option runs, but teams are starting to defend the option more soundly. However, when they dedicate more resources to stopping the option, defenses leave themselves exposed to the pass. Although Jackson has grown in the mental aspect of playing quarterback every season, his accuracy and ball placement could be spotty. Having an X receiver with a big catch radius can be beneficial for Jackson.
Bateman (6-0, 190) has prototypical X receiver size. He has a nice package of releases to get off press coverage, using quick footwork, deceptive shoulder fakes and a sudden first step to burst past defenders. He doesn’t have explosive speed, but he’s smooth in and out of breaks and can run a full route tree. He has strong hands, catches the ball away from his body, isn’t afraid to catch passes over the middle, and can hang on to the ball through contact. Bateman has inside/outside versatility — he’ll give Jackson the big target he hasn’t had on the outside and can also be used in a “big slot” role.

Re: Welcome to Baltimore Rashod Bateman!
I love Bateman but the first sentence of that last paragraph is pretty hilarious

Re: Welcome to Baltimore Rashod Bateman!
Definitely not "prototypical" WR1 size... But the part that always gets left out is the 33' arms, same as Justin Jefferson, longer arms than Odell who is known for his freaky wingspan for his height. 9 1/2 hands, bigger than Jefferson.
Bateman's catch radius is far bigger than his 6'0 frame indicates which is why people believed he was truly 6'2 on tape. 33' arms is more in line with a guy who is 6'3-6'4.
Jaleel Scott is 6'5 and has 33 1/2 inch arms... that's pretty wild and why I believe Bateman does have the catch radius of a WR1 type guy.

Re: Welcome to Baltimore Rashod Bateman!
Oh for sure. He’s got high end catch radius and ball skills, and he eats press for breakfast. He’s definitely an X.
Just thought it was funny to say prototypical X receiver size literally immediately after listing the 6’0 190. My guess is when he wrote that the parenthetical said 6’2 210 and then after the pro day they changed that without changing anything else about the sentence lol.

Re: Welcome to Baltimore Rashod Bateman!
Probably was the case lol. Had the writer just added a quick blurb about the arm length/catch radius then he could've at least had it make some sort of sense.
It was interesting that Bateman is already back up to 200 lbs via his youtube channel. Wonder if he shed some weight for his Pro Day to try to get the 40 time as low as possible.

Re: Welcome to Baltimore Rashod Bateman!
Quite possible, lol.
But it also got me thinking - What "IS" prototypical Z receiver size? What is the average height weight of Z receivers around the league? Is it closer to 6'4" or 6'1"?
Here are the top 25 players in receiving yards last year. IMO, if you are on this list, then you are likely your team's #1 WR, whether it's at X(typically) or somewhere else. Looking at the list, I think maybe Bateman DOES in fact have "prototypical" size. Also, interesting that for so much of the griping some us do around here regarding WR, there are two TEs in the top 10. If at the end of 2021 Mandrews is on this list, I will be perfectly happy with that.
Stefon Diggs 127 rec,1535 yds - 6'0" 194 lbs
Travis Kelce 105 rec, 1416 yds - N/A
DeAndre Hopkins 115 rec, 1407 yds - 6'1" 212 lbs
Justin Jefferson 88 rec, 1400 yds - 6'1" 203 lbs
Calvin Ridley 90 rec, 1374 yds - 6'1" 190 lbs
Davante Adams 115 rec, 1374 yds - 6'1" 216 lbs
DK Metcalf 83 rec, 1303 yds - 6'4" 230 lbs
Tyreek Hill 87 rec, 1276 yds - 5'10" 185 lbs
Allen Robinson 102 rec, 1250 yds - 6'3" 210 lbs
Darren Waller 107 rec, 1196 yds - N/A
D.J. Moore 66 rec, 1193 yds - 6'0" 209 lbs
Brandin Cooks 81 rec, 1150 yds - 5'10" 185 lbs
Terry McLaurin 87 rec, 1118 yds - 6'0" 210 lbs
Amari Cooper 92 rec, 1114 yds - 6'1" 225 lbs
Robby Anderson 95 rec, 1096 yds - 6'3" 190 lbs
A.J. Brown 70 rec, 1075 yds - 6'0" 226 lbs
Tyler Lockett 100 rec, 1054 yds - 5'10" 182 lbs
Mike Evans 70 rec, 1006 yds - 6'5" 231 lbs
Keenan Allen 100 rec, 992 yds - 6'2" 211 lbs
Corey Davis 65 rec, 984 yds - 6'3" 209 lbs
Marvin Jones 76 rec, 978 yds - 6'2" 200 lbs
Cooper Kupp 92 rec, 974 yds - 6'2" 208 lbs
Cole Beasley 82 rec, 967 yds - 5'8" 175 lbs
Robert Woods 90 rec, 936 yds - 6'0" 195 lbs

Re: Welcome to Baltimore Rashod Bateman!
NFL definitely went through a fad with tall WR's. Everybody wanted the 6'4 or 6'5 guys who could "play above the rim". But so many of them just didn't have the suddenness or route running ability to excel at the NFL level. There were 30 Tommy Streeter's for every 1 Calvin Johnson or Mike Evans.
I thought AB was the best WR in the NFL for many years on end at all of 5'10 185 lbs. It seems like the NFL is getting away from the size obsession at WR and realizing the sweet spot is more like 5'10-6'2. Usually much more agile, sudden, crisper routes, easier to get open.

Re: Welcome to Baltimore Rashod Bateman!
Ravens sign Rashod Bateman :
https://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/20...kson-receivers
" According to @MySportsUpdate on Twitter, the Ravens signed Bateman to a four-year deal worth $12.6 million, with $6.53 million as a signing bonus. Of course, with Bateman being a first-round pick, there is a fifth-year team option.
This can only mean good things for the team as they no longer have to hammer out details on the deal, or deal with the drama of a possible hold out. Rather, they’ll now have him under contract and Bateman gets paid. In all, this is excellent news and a bit striking to see how quickly things worked out. Sure seems like Bateman’s wanted to be a Raven sooner, rather than later. "
Good News... Bc
