Maybe tangential but I don’t like the number change thing. The number conventions makes it much easier to tell who’s who on the field, especially when not watching your “home team”

Great HOF players that already constructed the bulk or even all of their qualifications prior to joining a new team.
If longevity isn't a criterion for you, then those two belong. Might as well add Boldin and maybe Jacoby Jones, too. Derrick Mason?

I have a bit of an anti-mercenary bias, so it's a factor for me.

No, what I'm saying is due to the lack of longevity and the fact that they were likely HOFers without their stints with the Ravens, they should not have their numbers retired here.

Okay. Sorry. Misunderstood. That's exactly where I am with them.

    HOFer - Retire the number
When newly inducted HOFers come to the "homecoming" game the year they go in, give them their ring, the HOF plaque thingy, a video montage, and retire the jersey right then. Keeps it nice and neat.

    ROH - don't re-issue, with a caveat:
If it's a ROH player, simply make it a standard courtesy that they get a ceremonial phone call to request that their number be re-issued and do it. Make a little video about it and post it on social media. Call it "passing the torch" or something like that. Gives them a trip down memory lane for their families and the fans to remember their great moments with the club.

P.S. - Both Sizzle and Yanda are going in, so bank on 75, 52, 20, 55 and 73 never being worn by another Ravens player.
J-Tuck, I'm still not sure just because of how fickle and stringent the committee seems to be when it comes to specialists.
Hello, can I please speak to Earnest Byner?

Hi Earnest, it's the Ravens again. Sorry but we're going to need that #21 for this year. I understand that you are in the ROH but we just drafted Chris McAlister/Ladarius Webb and signed Mark Ingram. We only have so many numbers available so we just can't afford to not issue it.

What is that? Would be willing to issue #20 instead? Sorry but I don't think so.....

Fair enough, but they seem to have a see-saw battle Eddie & Ray. Freeney definitely ate JO's launch too often though.

If the Ravens make it to another Super Bowl, and Tucker kicks the game winning 55-yard FG in OT, I suspect when he retires (2035?) they will retire his number even if he doesn't get into the HOF... Bc

I've seen some people on Twitter debating whether Hollywood should be allowed to wear 5 which was his college number. I guess the question is do we draw the line at HOF players or players of extreme importance to the franchise who may not be HOF? I'd probably say no, but I'm not hardline on it.
You can't retire numbers willy nilly. Even HOFers shouldn't have their numbers retired. It should be a very, very rare circumstance otherwise you will run out of numbers. I wouldn't retire any.

Really? We would have to get 15 3/8 approved just to have numbers to give out.

Remember people, there are limited numbers for positions and we do dress up to 90 guys in preseason as well.

Ray is the only Ravens that should even be considered.

20, 52, and 75 are guarantees. 55 and 73 will probably remain out of circulation until we know more about their HOF chances.

But 5? No way. I love Joe and think they did right by him to not give it out for a number of years, but it'll be back in the rotation soon. Love the guy but no way him or any of the other guys mentioned should even be in consideration. Hell, some of the numbers mentioned already have had so many guys rotate in and out of that jersey.

But the fact that they just opened the ranges of numbers across positions negates that. With more numbers now available for more position groups, having 5 or 6 retired numbers per team shouldn't really be that much of a stretch.

I knew you or somebody would point out the ridiculousness of Byner being in the ROH...so thank you
