The comp pick formula/strategy going forward

The minority hiring rule giving out comp picks drastically changed things this year, and there is no reason to think that won't be the same going forward. Instead of 11 3rd rounders coming from player losses, 5 out of those 11 came from minority hires pushing players that would have qualified for a 3rd in year's past down the list. Now of course the Ravens were a beneficiary of this new rule, but that might not be the case in the future. It is going to be very hard to get 3rd rd comps going forward, I mean if you didn't lose a top 6 FA you would not have gotten a 3rd this draft. Also those 6th or 7th picks at the bottom, guys who might have garnered a late pick got nothing.

Don't think it changes much from how we approach things, but something to look for and see how it affects our golden goose where we just dominate other teams year after year.

The Ravens hired Tee Martin, Keith Williams, Anthony Weaver, Jason Brooks, D'Anton Lynn and Jay Peterson.

All of them are "black". Only Rob Ryan among this season's coaching hires is "white".

It's not a coincidence. It's an incentive. The Ravens play the comp pick game better than anyone besides the Patriots.

I can definitely see Tee Martin going to OC after 2021 or 2022, then to HC for somebody in the next 5 years. It's a long term process but one that could definitely result in even more comp picks down the road, on top of that I think he was just super qualified for the job to begin with regardless of race. As was Keith Williams/Weaver.

Ravens definitely wanted to re-stock that coaching tree with some premium minority candidates this offseason

I think the point is more to say that the tradition of avoiding free agency to ‘protect your comp picks’ is going to be significantly diminished going forward

Not so sure about that. Sit back and see if EDC bites on anyone that would disrupt a potential comp

Depends if the coaches comp picks count towards the maximum of 4 picks a team is allowed to awarded through the regular comp pick formula. I’m not clear on that. If that isn’t the case then it won’t have any effect on how teams approach free agency.

Very true. The value of future draft pick compensation for losing all but the the most expensive and productive FAs is significantly diminished.

It was 4 not 5 and they come on top of the 32 original comp picks. So rules havent changed for the original 32 picks. It will just be some extra picks at the end of round 3 each year.

Thats why the total of comp picks was 36 this year, max for player picks is 32.

Yes. There are more comp picks available than usual and the Ravens are looking well placed to earn a few more of those in future.

Other than that nothing's changed. The number of 3rd Round comp picks has always been variable - there were 3 in 2015, 4 in 16, 11 in 17, 4 in 18, 7 in 19 and 10 last year. This year there will be 6 3rds awarded for player movements plus 4 for coaching hires, so it's no different from usual.

It’s killing 2 birds with one stone.....I can’t think of the proper idiom but there is one that applies.

The fact that there are many quality African American coaches and execs available to be hired let’s you know why the incentive program was needed.

Tee Martin is over qualified compared to other WR coaches. He broke in to college coaching working with QBs then moved to WRs and worked his way up to OC and was in line for HC gig (which are rare).

Seems like this new rule encouraging minority hiring (aka "2020 Resolution JC-2A") is working better than the old Rooney rule. But unless minority hiring really takes off, the high dollar FA losses should still net comp. picks. But perhaps a round lower, which will factor into the decision making. It's the lower end of the comp. picks which will get pushed down to nothing. Can't expect freebie 6th/7th rounders anymore.

It won't affect anything. Those picks are in addition to the 32 comp picks and they won't change the round where they are awarded. The number of 3rd round comp picks has always fluctuated.
