Dak Prescott's New Deal - Lamar Jackson Must be Very Happy

Lamar is going to get more. Count on it

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...s-160-million/

Prescott, 27, will get a four-year, $160 million deal with potential to earn another $4 million. He also gets a no-trade clause and no-tag clause, and $126 million is guaranteed.

The first three years average $42 million per year, per Adam Schefter of ESPN, and includes $66 million to sign and $75 million in year one, the most in NFL history.

Prescott cost the Cowboys more than he would have had the team reached agreement earlier in his career, but they ensured the former fourth-round choice will be around beyond this season.

Owner Jerry Jones long has expressed confidence that in Prescott the Cowboys have their quarterback of the present and the future.

Prescott is 42-27 in the regular season in his five-year career, with a 1-2 postseason record. He has passed for 17,634 yards with 106 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.

Prescott was leading the league in passing yards with 1,856 before the compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in Week 5 against the Giants. He underwent immediate surgery and a second surgery in December.

Lamar might get more but maybe not. If he signs after this year he might not average as much (would likely get more total though). What Lamar could make in years 4-5 has to be considered, which is much less than this. Adding that into the extension lowers the average. Signing early gets Lamar guarantees and a lot more earlier but the Ravens are going to want those cheaper years averaged in.

The mistake the Cowboys made was letting this get so late into the process when they were committed to Dak two years ago. They should have signed him then. The average wouldn't have been so high and the deal so short. This is a great deal for Dak because he will be back at the table in 3-4 years while still in his prime. Jerruh f---ed this one up, bad.

Prime example of why I wouldn’t have minded one bit if the Ravens extended him earlier in the offseason. Huge over payment by the Cowboys which now has the bar set for the absolute minimum for Lamar.

And let’s face it, Lamar has every right to ask for more than Prescott.

I don't believe a first rounder can be extended until after his 3rd year, which is now for Lamar.

Not worth it and honestly when quarterbacks take that much of the cap they are failing as leaders.

I don't see how Lamar can't get more. He was a league MVP. His win loss record is going to be better that Dak's. Unless he suffers a major injury Lamar will surpass this. Josh Allen will probably surpass this as well. It's good to be a winning QB in the NFL with some stats. That will get you crazy money

He will get more but on a longer deal that may not average more because years 4-5 of his current deal would be averaged in (assuming he signs this off season). It might average more over a very long deal like Mahomes has. If Lamar signed a 4 year deal right now he could get $50 million per year over the last 2 years of his deal but the first 2 years would likely look very much like he is getting paid on the current contract.

This year Lamar is scheduled to make $1.6 million. His 5th year option is $21 million. So over the next two years he will make under $23 million. The Ravens will want that averaged in.

Which, for both sides, is why it won’t get done this year.
A whole lot easier to give him a 4 year $200m extension next offseason at 5/221 $44m average where everyone can save face and cap can be handled in a reasonable manner.

Give Lamar $75 m in cash this year and not massively effect that $1.6m cap number, I dare you...

This is why you trade OBJ before the draft, cap is about to get tight once Lamar gets extended next offseason and we need every bit of draft ammo to secure some cheap talent around him. Orlando is gone in 2022 either way, make sure you get something premium for him now.

I would go offense heavy in the draft, the defensive talent always has a way of working itself out, the offense not so much
