If newspapers were doing their jobs correctly, what would be the need for an entirely separate industry to separate truth from fiction?

"Fact Checkers" are a re-brand of the same narrative-peddling activities that newspapers and TV networks engaged in, but got caught fabricating. Since they lost their credibility, the needed to create a new means of peddling their propaganda.

Plus it gives people a simple way to refute an argument. Someone claims XYZ, so you do a Google search (curated and controlled by the ruling class and filtered to only show what they want you to see), the first several results are your "fact checkers" challenging a straw man argument to yield the desired "false", "four pinnocchios" or whatever stupid verdict they deem authoritative. Total bullshit, anyone with average intelligence can see right through the game being played.
