How Davante Adams found another gear with help from his first Fresno State coach

Keith Williams, who was Fresno State’s wide receivers coach from 2009 to 2011, discovered Davante Adams back when he was a two-star recruit, the No. 281 player at his position in the Class of 2011.

Adams hasn’t seen his trusted former position coach Williams, who now is based in Nebraska, in person since 2019, but they talk over FaceTime three or four times a week, for at least 20 minutes and sometimes as long as an hour and a half, going over countless clips and discussing how he can continue to refine his skill set, grinding away at the details.

Adams told The Athletic he credits Williams “a lot” for where he is today, “from some of the stuff that I say to the way I run a lot of routes, the way I have evolved from the beginning of this season, even. “We talk after every single game, talk several times a week. Whether it’s practice clips, I send him stuff of me not running a route so great, and we figure out a way to run it better, and then I’ll send him a clip of something in the game where I did what he said and it’s a touchdown or a successful play. I feel like he’s evolved my mindset as far as running after the catch more than anything. He kind of started that little phrase that I started out with of, ‘Make ’em tackle you, don’t get tackled.’ That’s always been the mindset since I first got to Fresno State, and he was my wideout coach then. We would get chewed out for catching a ball, whether it was in practice or whatever, we had a live period, and it didn’t look like the guy really had to work to tackle us.”

Adams isn’t the only star receiver playing this weekend who works with Williams. The coach has spent the past three seasons training Chiefs speedster Tyreek Hill, among others. His first client in this side job was another Packers wide receiver, James Jones, whom he coached at San Jose State. Jones came back every July to hone his skills with his old college coach, later following him up to Fresno to train.

“Everyone tries to over-articulate everything that is happening now nowadays,” Williams said. “The releases aren’t as technical as people try to make them because what you’re actually doing is just getting beyond that guy in less than a second. The DB is actually mirroring you and reacting to you and their thought process isn’t that extensive either because everything’s happening so fast, it’s not as technical as people think. What happens now is that it gets overexplained, and you can mentally paralyze the kid.

In 2016, Tyreek Hill’s rookie year, Dubb had worked with former Oregon Duck standout and current Baltimore Raven De’Anthony Thomas. Thomas received high praise during training camp for his nuanced route-running and ability to get in and out of breaks. Hill took note of this and asked Thomas who he worked with during the offseason. The answer was simple: “Coach Dubb.” When the season ended, Hill felt he would have an opportunity to be a full-time starter on the outside — the Z position — during the upcoming season. He reached out to Dubb to help him refine his intermediate route-running ability in preparation for the following year.

Dubb is constantly learning new and innovative ways to coach receivers, whether it’s using soccer balls during training sessions, or as he puts it, science.

As Dubb tells it, a kid who does workouts with him, catches an NFL-sized football that is too large for his hands. The larger size forced him to spread his fingers more to catch the ball. When the young kid would go back to catching a smaller ball, he would effortlessly pluck the ball out of the air. Dubb took note of this while wondering if he could figure out a way to incorporate a bigger ball into his workouts. While watching TV one day, he suddenly popped up and ran to the trunk of his car to fetch one of his daughter’s soccer balls. He tossed the ball in the air to himself several times and noticed two things: one, he spread his fingers more to grip the bigger ball; and two, he caught the ball away from his body. Two fundamental details that translate to actual football. At that moment, the soccer ball was born, at least in football drills.

Here you see Tyreek Hill working with Dubb Williams. Dubb specializes in getting receivers to play fast and explode out of their breaks. The soccer ball is an added element to help improve catching the ball.

Really excited about these new coaches who should bring new life to the WR and O meeting rooms.

Does this mean Keith Williams no longer can work with the likes of Adams, Hill, etc in the offseason? I assume the weekly calls and texts during the season to study tape and breaks are definitely out of the questions now. Should bode well for guys like Hollywood, Boykin, Duvernay, etc.

Now if only the NFL would relax its coaching time restrictions during the offseason.

Yup! I think it does!

That's probably why Harbs hired both of those guys.
Can't get Tyreek or Davante, then make things more difficult for them!
