These two new assistants on offense are serious business!

Harbs not fucking around. That's awesome. I'll put up timelines for them tomorrow.

    Re: Ravens Coaching Changes

    https://www.baltimoreravens.com/news...t-and-wr-coach

The Ravens have made four additions to their coaching staff, Head Coach John Harbaugh announced Saturday.

Keith Williams has been hired as Pass Game Specialist, Tee Martin as Wide Receivers Coach, Jason Brooks as Assistant Defensive Line Coach and Jay Peterson as Assistant Linebackers Coach.

Williams and Martin replace David Culley, who was hired as the Texans' head coach. Brooks will work under new Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach Anthony Weaver and Peterson will work with new Inside Linebackers Coach Rob Ryan.

The 42-year-old Martin spent the past two seasons as the University of Tennessee's Assistant Head Coach/Wide Receivers, and before that he spent three seasons as USC's offensive coordinator.

While serving as offensive coordinator at USC in 2017, Martin helped the Trojans form the nation's 13th-ranked offense, en route to winning the Pac-12 Championship and advancing to the Cotton Bowl. Upon returning to Tennessee, Martin helped lead improvements across the board for the offense, as the Volunteers saw an increase in production in total offense, passing yards, rushing yards, scoring and third-down conversions.

"Tee is a natural, charismatic leader, whose bright offensive mind will benefit our young group of wideouts," Harbaugh said. "His history of coaching standout receivers on the collegiate level will translate well to the NFL."

A college assistant coach since 2006, Martin spent four seasons as an NFL backup quarterback and two seasons playing in the CFL. One of the greatest quarterbacks in Tennessee history, Martin led the Volunteers to a 13-0 record and a national championship in 1998.

Martin has also coached a number of wide receivers currently playing in the NFL, including JuJu Smith-Schuster, Nelson Agholor, Robert Woods and Randall Cobb.

Martin's son is former Clemson wide receiver Amari Rodgers, a top prospect in the upcoming draft. Martin and Rodgers recently spent time together at the Senior Bowl.

Williams has extensive experience coaching wide receivers, a group he's guided for 18 years at the collegiate level, including with Nebraska from 2015-17. Williams has been an assistant coach at Nebraska, Tulane, and Fresno State. Most recently, he has built a reputation as a personal coach for several top NFL wide receivers, including the Chiefs' Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins and Packers' Davante Adams.

"Keith has extensive experience working as a personal coach for some of the NFL's top wide receivers," Harbaugh said. "His offensive knowledge – particularly in the passing game – and his ability to get the very best out of his players aligns well with the values of our coaching staff."
One note on verbiage that this article clears up:
And that makes sense to me because at first blush I would peg Tee Martin as the more accomplished coach.
He's been an OC before and worked with QBs (Darnold) and played QB in college.
So if anyone was gonna get the passing game coordinator title it would seem to fit Martin more then Williams.
But as this article clears up some verbiage: Williams is a passing game "specialist" not "coordinator"

Seems like they added 2 WR coaches. Williams a technique and fundamentals guy and Martin big picture passing concepts (that could maybe hopefully help Lamar too)
"Those corners...and those safeties are going to be one-on-one... and we got to make them pay for it," Harbs

"I think he’d be[Lamar] the greatest player in the history of the game,” Young said

    Yeah.

Welp – this looks like a bet I lose:

Tee Martin's resume, while shorter, seems every bit as impressive as David Culley's. Arguably more so, Martin's "names" more recent than Culley's.

Also I was wrong with the second half of that post, where I said Harbs would only replace the WR coach part of Culley's duties, not hire a second coach (neither coordinator nor "specialist").

From Mobile to Los Angeles, USC's Tee Martin has charted his own course
    By Ted Miller

Henry Pough, a pastor and youth football coach recently represented Martin when he was announced as a selection for the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame. Their enduring relationship began this way: Pough was coaching a football practice. A 10-year old Martin was watching. When a ball got loose and ended up at Martin's feet, he threw it back. "When he threw it back, I looked at my assistant coach, and we were amazed," Pough said. "So I said, 'Back up a little bit,' and we started throwing it at about 30 yards. It was a tight spiral with pop to it. I said, 'Wait right there until my practice is over.' So I went and started begging his momma to let him play."

Martin's mother, Marie Hall, wasn't an easy sell. Baseball had been her son's sport. And what about expenses and transportation? Pough said he had it covered.

Almost immediately, Martin became a star quarterback who played both ways when the best athlete on the field was needed. Pough said he often let Martin call his own plays, something Martin also would do as an upperclassman at Williamson High School as he became a national prospect. "I don't know if we could have won a game without Tamaurice Martin," then-Williamson coach Curtis Horton said. "His senior year, we only had 27 boys out. We didn't have a lot of talent. He carried Williamson on his back. We went to the third round of the playoffs."

Martin excelled on the football field and in the classroom. He was placed in an honors program at Williamson that met daily in the school library. Surrounded by bright, motivated young people, he became as competitive for grades as he was for touchdowns.

    ...

Martin's favorite colleges were Miami and Florida State, but he particularly liked the Seminoles because of Charlie Ward. Martin wore No. 17 to be like Ward and Joe Gilliam and Doug Williams, pioneering black NFL quarterbacks. He wrote "McNair" inside his helmet for 1995 NFL first-round pick Steve McNair.

His decision to go to Tennessee was a carefully measured one. Then-Alabama coach Gene Stallings was honest with Martin: He thought Freddie Kitchens was the Crimson Tide's present and future behind center. Martin didn't want to compete for the starting job with friend Dameyune Craig at Auburn. That said, he also didn't want to play immediately. He knew he had a lot to learn. "If I'm going to sit, what better person to learn from than Peyton Manning, this young phenom?" he said.

The culture shock was extreme for Martin at Tennessee, socially, culturally and in football. Manning and Cutcliffe were doing offensive calculus in meetings, and it was Martin's job to figure out what was going on and catch up. Martin became a listener, an observer and would pepper Manning with questions.

"He was always very bright, always very studious, understood the game, was involved in meetings," Manning said. "He understood the importance of preparation. The mental side of it, he took that very seriously. The great coaches are able to teach the physical side and the mental side of it. I think Tee understands the importance of both."

Tee Martin didn't try to be the next Peyton Manning. That was the perfect strategy for Tennessee's 1998 title run

Like any competitor, Martin would have liked to play more. But instead of complaining in 1997, he continued with the approach that led him to Knoxville, to face off against an elite signal caller.

“The reason why I chose to come (to UT) was to compete with who at the time I felt was the best college quarterback,” Martin said of Manning. “I could have gone other places and started as a true freshman and who knows that would have been like. When I found out how good (Manning) was, I said, ‘Man, how could you prove yourself to be one of the better ones if you don’t compete against the best one everyday?’

“I didn’t know if I would sit for one year or two years. It ended up being two years, but I was OK with that. It was just a competitive challenge for me to show and prove to the coaching staff and my teammates that I belong.”

When Manning finally left following the 1997 season, it was Martin’s turn to lead UT’s offense. While some other players might have tried to live up Manning’s legacy or even surpass it, Martin didn’t view the transition that way.

“It wasn’t a personal vendetta,” Martin said. “I wanted to go against the best defense in the SEC (in practice at UT) and actually perform well against them. I wanted to show (receiver) Peerless Price, the receiving corps, (running back) Jamal Lewis and the offensive line that I could make the checks at the line of scrimmage, I could get us in the right play, I can take care of the football and get the ball in the end zone. Those are things that I focused on. It never really motivated me to fill the shoes of Peyton.”

Really like these hires, props to Harbs

I honestly thought he was just going to promote James Urban to be pass game coordinator, really happy we have an outside hire with a different perspective that will hopefully bring some fresh concepts to Roman to implement

Of course the key remains Roman and his willingness to inject more variety into the passing game.

Keith Williams feels blessed that son's in good hands on Frost's staff
    by Steven Sipple
    May 1, 2018
    https://journalstar.com/sports/huske...f49631e25.html
Keith Williams seems at peace. Not only is he immensely proud of his son — a senior who’s set to graduate this summer — the 47-year-old also talks at length about his daughter, Kaya, a freshman at Lincoln Southwest who plays on the varsity soccer team and carries a 4.0 grade-point average.

Williams and his wife, Ayana, reside in south Lincoln, and life is good. Yes, of course, Keith Williams wants to coach again, either in college or the NFL, he says. “But I’m just kind of taking advantage of this time being around my son and daughter, and letting it all play out,” he says. “I’m a believer in God’s plan “I take my daughter to school and pick her up every day,” he quickly adds. “It’s incredible.”

    ...

Williams and the rest of the previous Nebraska staff were let go almost immediately after last season’s 4-8 finish, and new head coach Scott Frost brought his entire staff from Central Florida, including offensive coordinator Troy Walters, who doubles as receivers coach.

Although it created an imperfect circumstance for Williams and his family, it obviously helps that he’s still being paid by Nebraska.

    ...

Williams stays busy. He continues to train receivers, including a cadre of current NFL players, at Speedway Village. During our lunch, Kansas City Chiefs standout Tyreek Hill called Williams' cellphone to arrange a workout. Ryan Grant of the Indianapolis Colts recently was in town and will return next week.

Ex-Husker Brandon Reilly, now of the Buffalo Bills, swears by Williams.

"People know he's a great guy, but I think he's even more spectacular than people know. I can't thank him enough,” Reilly says.

Meet Keith Williams, who helped turn Greg Ward from a practice-squad afterthought into a season-saver for the Eagles

“He helped me so much, helped me improve my game a lot,’’ Ward said. “He was always emphasizing that I need to sink my hips on routes. I learned a lot from him.’’
    ...
“The thing I used to preach to Greg and the rest of our guys was you have to be ready to seize the moment,’’ said Williams, a former college coach at Nebraska, Tulane, and Fresno State who trains more than a dozen NFL wideouts, including Ward, fellow Eagle Nelson Agholor, and the Chiefs’ Sammy Watkins.

I'm excited about the hire but passing game coordinator and a passing game specialist are two different things/roles. I wouldn't necceraily look at Keith Williams as someone that could influence/introduce fresh concepts to Greg Roman regarding the passing game. It's possible that he could be in charge of researching other teams rather it's at The NFL, College or High School level regarding new passing concepts but if anything he probably just assistant wide receiver coach that could be a voice to Roman on how to use certain wide receivers better.

It's a good marketing approch for The Ravens though if they do plan to attract free agent wide receivers because a guy like Williams has been making a name for himself as a wide receiver guru helping receivers like Sammy Watkins, Tyreek Hill, Devante Adams, and etc. James Urbans may still be involved with The Ravens passing concepts though.
