    Re: ELI5.....I Feel Stupid

“It goes back to the same criticism that we’ve heard for the last three years about not being the type of offense or the type of quarterback that some people want to see,” Harbaugh said Wednesday in his annual season-ending news conference. “We’re just going to have to live with it because Lamar Jackson has won a lot of football games here. Our offense has won us a lot of football games here and we’re not apologizing for that for one second. We’re going to improve it, no question about it. We’re going to go to work to be more precise, more efficient, better at what we do. That’s what we have to do, be better at it.
“We’ll leave the criticism to the critics and when they’re ready to coordinate their offense and put their product on the field, I’m looking forward to competing against it.”

The reason this is difficult to do a lot is because plays aren’t stand alone. The gameplan is a game of chess.

One of the keys that make plays work mid season after film is out, is the formations. Running opposite plays out of the same formations and actions.

Offensive game plans are not just game to game, but coaches have to introduce new plays out of the same formation later in the season because the film is out.

So taking plays from other coaches happens all the time, but you’ll see it from a different formation (usually one the team runs often).

Might as well grab Doug Pederson as your passing game coordinator.

I feel like I'm missing something big though lol as to why that can't simply be done. We've always heard that the NFL is a copycat league, and I feel like it shouldn't be that hard for Roman to just scrap whatever foolishness he has and just call Reids plays.....what am I missing here?

If it were that easy everyone would be doing it. Sure it's a copycat league but unless you have the same exact personnel, talent and philosophy it's not possible to duplicate what Andy is doing over in KC.

You have to want to copy. Harbaugh and Roman don't want to copy.

It's kind of like asking why a novice architect doesn't just steal the floor plans from a master architect and build it himself. You might have the blueprint but you don't know how or why it's built that way. You can't instruct or lead that build properly and it will likely end in disaster.

While the NFL is a copy cat league and you can steal concepts, it's borderline impossible to just rip somebody else's playbook and run it the same way, especially if you have no experience in that system and completely different personnel

Ripping off a play or two, sure. An entire scheme, no.

There was a coaching change. The new coach wanted Cousins. Or at least something like that.

    Shanahan/Shanahan/RGIII

    Gruden/McVay/Cousins

It wasn't exactly like that, but mostly.

I'm confident enough in our coaches that they can stay the course, run the ball like they normally do and get more efficient in the passing game. Our coaches don't get enough credit for revolutionizing the run game. Having said that there's no question they need better balance and it starts with Lamar improving his pre and post snap reads.

Greg Roman has also never OC'd a 3500 yd passer, he's just not an advanced passing scheme guy and it reflects on all his QB's. Lamar/Kap can sling the damn ball around, they have big time arm talent, he just triples down on the running game and spends little effort teaching the passing game to young QB's.

I absolutely would've gone my separate ways with him, a good OL & RB's are always going to be able to run the ball, having a run game specialist OC just doesn't make any sense to me at this juncture of Lamar's career. It's the wrong fit. OL's make the running game go more than an OC, same can't be said for throwing effectively.
