Re: What They're Saying About the Ravens

Question for the group. How do you--and "experts" view the Ravens vs the Bucs offenses?

The Ravens offense is 1st in rushing, 32nd in passing, and 7th in scoring.

The Bucs offense is 28th in rushing, 2nd in passing and 3rd in scoring.

Do the Bucs have less of a problem than the Ravens?

Does winning a divisional playoff game totally change that answer?

Yes the Bucs have less issues than the Ravens. If their line can pass block well enough for TB 12 to have it ranked #2 they shouldn’t be terrible at run blocking. Maybe scheme change? Also they have a “never was” at RB in Fourtnette If they had an explosive guy like Dobbins I think they’d be better.

Our oline is horrible at pass pro. So no matter who the WRs are ...Lamar has no time to set and throw.

Also a top passing team can score quickly. Our run heavy team takes time to move the ball.

Also Bucs have Waaayy better receivers than we do.

The Bucs problems running the ball were a problem when they rushed for 8 yards and lost to the Saints 38-3. If that had happened Sunday instead of back in November, there would be a lot of talk about it.

The thing is, every team has holes now. The days of teams that had a great running game, great passing game, and a great defense are gone. San Francisco in the 80s, Dallas in the 90s... back then you could build up all parts of your team.

Now, you have to decide who you are going to be. You can't be everything. Under Lamar, we've led the league in points, and had one of the top defenses every year. But we ended up losing in the playoffs, and just like every other team that loses in the playoffs, it forces you to look at your weaknesses. And every team has them.

Ravens are going to sign Lamar and keep roman for all the wrong reasons. Its clear as day at this point that the two together are not going to be successful unless there are whole sale changes.

And we know roman doesn't change

If the Saints offense doesn't have a total meltdown with four turnovers the Bucs would be right where the Ravens are today. However, the advantage in having a dominant passing attack and a horrible rushing attack (as opposed to the opposite) is that generally speaking, the passing attack is going to have more opportunity for bigger chunk plays and move the ball downfield in less time when necessary. A rushing attack falling behind by 14 points has a problem.

    Fair answers. I don't disagree.

Devils advocate says there are counterbalancing arguments that favor the Ravens.

They play a style of offense defenses don't see very often and it's difficult to defend 11-11 (sometimes even 10 D vs. 11 O. because the Ravens will leave defenders unblocked) when teams are used to playing 11 on 10 defense all year.

They are third in explosive play rate.

When they get a lead they suffocate your offense by keeping the ball

When you are zigging while all others zag, you can game the system on player acquisition. Cheaper players or players taken later in drafts can be valuable only to the Ravens. Lamar was a prime example, taken as the fifth QB. Zeus fell to the third round because teams fears his ability to pass protect. Dobbins was great value in the second round, more valuable than a lot of RBs teams wasted first round picks on. A third round tight end in Andrews. A converted DLman playing fullback. They can pick linemen who fit what they do.

But now they need to adjust their sights to a new target when it comes to what they need from the passing game, and need to align players, play callers, and possibly assistant coaches to support that goal

Re: What They're Saying About the Ravens

I have seen coaches say you can take away anything a offense wants to do, pass or run if you commit the players to it, its up to the offense than to make them pay by doing the other, Lamar has not been able to beat anybody with his arm if they take away the run

Re: What They're Saying About the Ravens

It is clear that Lamar is simply not yet, and may never be, a quick-look, first-release seam passer. And yes, I know where the Ravens ranked in passing during the regular season. And yes again, the down & outs (inside WRs) and goes (outside WRs) the Ravens ran a few times in the playoff game are plays I doubt even a JV High School football team would run.

Nonetheless, despite the faults in the scheme, Lamar managed two more "splash" plays (throws of 30 & 31 yds to Hollywood and JK) than Josh Allen (no completions more than 21 yds all night). Also, Lamar's yds per attempt of 6.8 exceeded Josh Allen's (5.6). Perhaps the swirling wind limited both teams passing games. Of course, kudos to the Ravens D.

I personally fault Lamar more for the inexplicable failure to hand the ball off to JK when we are first and 10 from the Buf 25, at 9:40 of the first quarter, that resulted in an 11 yard "sack" that essentially pushed us into a FG attempt, shown at the 3 min, 30 sec mark of this video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS_FJwMOB4U?t=209

This one play killed the Ravens' momentum on the opening drive. Until this play, Ravens were running the ball down the Bills throat ... our OL was dominating their lighter, albeit as we later saw faster DL.

There was also a play in the Titans game that seemed liked it could have been huge had Lamar pitched to JK.

For some reason, in my opinion JK remains under utilized in the run game. JK is at fault for the playoff loss, as well, for this two drops. These two drops, the "sack" noted above, plus the pick six were all the difference in the world.

In the playoffs, you are playing the best teams, with the best coaches, and after 16 weeks of tape that they can study.

    Great point!
And teams will pick up on some of our coaching and their stubborn tendencies. I text a buddy today saying how stubborn Harbs is and how set in his ways he is.

We talk about what “they’re” saying about the Ravens... How about what the Ravens are saying about the Ravens. Hollywood and Snead. Dez posting a video on his IG of a practice and Hollywood reposting it and players from the team commenting on it.

It makes you how much of a disconnect between Roman and the players (particularly WRs) there is. If he stays around and it continues down this path next season could turn ugly for the Baltimore Ravens.

Mutiny 2021. Hopefully the front office and coaches realize something has to change with the Ravens passing offense.

Players are signaling they’ve had enough.
