Re: “Non” Sack Daddy and Judon

My guess is that you'll see some sacks on Sunday -- mostly of the coverage variety. It will leave the illusion that the pass rush is improving, but really it will just be the quality of opponent getting worse.

    My thoughts exactly.

Like whatever year it was where we faced all those backup and subpar QBs that had a lot of people convinced the defense was great, then it bombed late season (as usual).

    Exactly.

Important to note though that that 'level of competition' thing swings both ways. For all the people who are freaking out about this and that because of Monday night, it's important to remember we were playing the most unstoppable offense since the Patriots Moss years. Nobody has gotten a pass rush on the Chiefs in a long time. They've given up multiple sacks in a game twice in the past year.

It hasn't. He looks slow, he doesn't have enough power to make up for it. It's just bad.

Judon has also been just bad. They're asking him to do a lot of things, but the problem is he's not doing those things very well. Compare that to Bowser, Bowser is doing a lot of those things well. He looks fluid in coverage, his tackling is better (sans Mahomes sack attempt) and he's getting after the passer a bit better.

Judon did have a good pass rushing week against the Texans though. 6 pressures and Tytus Howard held him three times. So I'll give him credit there.

At this point with Judon, they need to move him. Play him as the Rush LB and let Bowser be the versatile SAM.
I'm ready to cut a second year guy some slack, more so considering the odd pre-season he's had. I think he needs to do something with his body type though or he might be one of those guys that can set the edge and offer little more.

But Judon? Nah, a guy on a contract year that was aiming at 16m+ a year needs to show something and I'll be fuming if he's stays next year. I'm also sick of the he's asked to cover in many snaps thing. For 16m+ a year I'd rather a guy that does nothing but pressure the QB but consistently.

Bowser needs more snaps, he's played really well

I think the Ravens have developed a new defensive strategy around Judon's ability to rush the passer. Its called the ''totem pole" rush. Its based on Judon's ability to stand there motionless like a big upright log - hoping that the quarterback runs into him knocking himself out in the process. The Ravens have invested about $17 Million in developing this new radical defensive technique.

Judon wouldn’t have played in much preseason and not having it shouldn’t have made him so much less explosive. He should have had himself ready for a weird covid season.

If Judon can't get ready for a contract year under the franchise tag, it's even more reason to move on.

For me, no preseason for Judon isn't an excuted. He's been through full offseasons before. He should know what he has to do.

Ferguson gets a little bit more leeway in my eyes, as do the rooks. That first TC can be overwhelming, so this would have been his first normal camp, and that could have tripped him up.

But it's not like it's a situation that's unique to only the Ravens, so you still have to be prepared.
