Re: Week 2 Other Games
Burrows looked alright for a rookie but he's staring down his receivers and he's going to be an INT machine. also had some lapses in pocket awareness that lead to the sort of hits that can just derail a rookie's progress. there was one tonight that he was just totally unaware that someone was coming full-speed. if memory serves, an OL got a little chip block in to divert the defender just enough, but if it weren't for that it woulda been one of those horrendous collisions where the QB was completely loose and their head flops back and all that.
before Flacco teams didn't start their rookie QBs, and then suddenly in the late '00s everyone decided it would be a good idea to throw their rookie out there at the hardest position in pro sports. sometimes it works, but my first take is that Burrows is one of those who would benefit from backing up someone else for a year. even if the bengals are our rival, i hope it doesn't ruin him. i think that's one of the shittier developments in the NFL in the last 15 years, so much wasted talent. guess that's what happens when teams fire coaches after 2 years, coaches are in a hurry to get their future star QB on the field.
EDIT: and as noted in other people's posts, that occasional lack of awareness combined with their bad OLine is just an awful combo. if they go 2-6 expect to see calls for them to bench JB from the fans, not to win more but just to protect him for '21.

Re: Week 2 Other Games
Teams start rookies now because head coaches get three years to win not five plus they use to get. On top of that almost every coaching opening is because the team sucks and needs to rebuild. First pick is Qb. You can not let him sit on the bench for two years like they did years ago. KC let Mahomes sit for an year but that is a rare thing these days. The Bengals are screwed because they missed on two first round o line draft picks five years ago. Their line is still scrubs and bums at work. Nobody on that line would be starting for the Ravens. Do not even know if they could be our backups.

Burrow didn't get a preseason like most do, he'll be fine after taking his lumps

Re: Week 2 Other Games
Ben Roethlisberger started his rookie year and crushed it. Andy Dalton also started day 1, but yes, that was after Flacco. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Eli and Rivers also started day 1.
But these are all guys that built careers. I feel like the Browns started a bunch on day 1 also, all lost to the universe as busts. Sam Bradford and cam started day one i believe. Not fact checking this, just going from memory. But I definitely think it's not new to Flacco, if anything big Ben set the standard for rookie starts.

Re: Week 2 Other Games
Kurt Warner initially started the year Eli was drafted. I can't remember if Warner got hurt or benched that year, but Eli got the start not long into the season. I remember one of his early games was against the Ravens at home, and Eli had a 0 quarterback rating. I was at that came. It was very cold, and I was very drunk, and it was awesome. It was one of the few games where Kyle Boller played really well.
