Re: Predict the duration of the 2020 season
The issue is that it hasn't been handled here, the way that it has in other parts of the world, some of which you mentioned. Not only did the Marlins front office push for them to play, but the players did as well. A sentiment that is likely widespread throughout the league. Because of how those other nations handled the issue, from the top down, the leagues were able to begin with a strong stance and well versed planning. That hasn't been the case here and outbreaks are happening all over the place.

Re: Predict the duration of the 2020 season
The KBO (as well as European soccer leagues) all are in countries that have significantly more control over the virus.
Soccer and basketball in the US have both been played in bubbles (and pre-bubble they weren't handled better, one NWSL team out of 9 and 2 MLS teams out of 26 had to drop out before those tournaments began).
Those are the only two ways playing sports without complications has been shown to work: play in a country with low and controllable infection numbers, or play in a bubble.

Re: Predict the duration of the 2020 season
To be clear: I wouldn't bet my money on having a season.
But, I am hopeful.
IF they do it right; it is possible.
I believe the NFL is going to do their very best to make the season happen.
And for a season to happen they have to develop better protocols then the rest of the country.
From what I have seen on NFLN the few teams they showed seemed to be doing things right."Those corners...and those safeties are going to be one-on-one... and we got to make them pay for it," Harbs

Re: Predict the duration of the 2020 season
Every week that other leagues continue to play, is that much more weight to the case that the NFL will play. They consider themselves to be the first and foremost. There is no way in hell that they'll not play, if other leagues are playing.
And look who is:
MLB
NBA
WNBA
NHL
NWSL
MLS
The attitude will very much be: well hell if those guys can do it.
And players are far more fungible in football, than in any other sport. The NFL once aired games with replacement players during a strike! Even if a team has 20 players on Covid reserve, they'll just be like "next man up" / no one is feeling sorry for us / it is what it is / etc. There's always been a culture of replaceability. That lends itself very well to having games during a pandemic.
This too. They actually included the Players Union in planning how to do this! Which is remarkable. Certainly not the route that say MLB took.
The individual teams also seem to have spent a shit-ton of money on equipment, incl those proximity meters and that spray-shower thing players walk thru before they hit the field, etc. Saints putting their coaches & players into bubble-suites in the stadium.
Also, and this is just an impression, but I think football players tend to be slightly more obedient, or "good soldiers", than baseball or basektball players do. Sure, you got your Marshawn Lynch's and your Antonio Browns; but on the whole, seems like football players more see themselves as a group, and are more likely to go with what's best for the group. Again, just an impression.
The NFL had months of lead time, that MLB and the NBA did not. And they seemed to have used that time very well. Being so proactive about partnering with the players union was the key to all of it. But also, investing in gadgets and upgrades, and preaching the seriousness of it:
If I had to take a wild-assed guess, I would say that the median number of Covid-positive players per team this season is going to be around a dozen. This semi-bubble stuff that the NFL is doing will be pretty effective: contact tracing, protocols, isolation etc. But still a couple guys will catch it on every team. A few teams are going to get absolutely hammered; a couple teams will do extremely well with infections; everyone else somewhere in between.

Re: Predict the duration of the 2020 season
NFL privately remains very confident full season will be played :
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ill-be-played/
"Although the Commissioner has subtly shifted his vow from playing a full season to playing a complete one, the NFL privately has a high degree of confidence that the 2020 season will be played in full, pandemic notwithstanding.
That may hard for many to accept as the fall college football season circles the drain, but pro football has significant and fundamental differences that point to success even if college football can’t pull it off.
Either way, time will tell. In 32 days, the first game will be played, when the Texans visit the Chiefs. "

the NFL has something college doesn't have - billionaire owners who can afford to test, scan, and test again every day.

Re: Predict the duration of the 2020 season
I think the NFL has an advantage of seeing how poorly the MLB is doing with it. And of course, teams only play a game per week vs multiple games a week for teams in MLB.
There's a way to do this and do it right, but a lot of it has to do with the players staying safe.

Re: Predict the duration of the 2020 season
If this report on point-of-care testing is actually true, it might mean the NFL could feasibly play this year.
The article basically says that the league believes they've now got access to a test that is 97 percent accurate that they can perform at the facility and get results without having to send it to a lab. They would use this test to supplement the other regular lab tests they're doing.
Something like that means you could conceivably test a player in the morning, and keep him from taking the field for practice (or a game) a couple hours later if he tests positive.Last edited by Matchstick; 08-10-2020 at 12:55 PM.
