The way I see it: I do what is suggested hoping it will make a difference, even the slightest is a win in my book, so I do what I can. Worst case scenario is that they do absolutely nothing so I just inconvenienced myself by looking like sub zero for a bit. It's worth the effort imo

I agree, but would add that the wife and I also use "common sense" (which seems not so common these days) to the mix. Like you, we wear masks, social distance, frequent hand washing, etc. If the Surgeon General of the U.S. told people it was not necessary or protective to do so, we would still do it!
