Yep seems that is what the chiefs and Mahomes did. Gonna be interesting to see what EDC does with Lamar.

There does seem to be a balloon payment/poison pill which will force renegotiation. In 2027 there is a $10 million bonus, a $550,000 workout bonus and a $49.4 base salary for a total of $59.95 million. Either some of that base gets converted to bonus or they negotiate or they get out of the deal and save a crazy amount of cap space. As we saw with Flacco, those kind of balloon years are put in to force some sort of action on the part of the team. Mahomes will be 32 at the start of that season which is a good time to re-evaluate.

I'd sign Lamar to a 10 year $400 million contract tomorrow if I was the Ravens.

We've seen how even 4 or 5 year, top of the market contracts can come to look like relative bargains before the end. Even if the cap dips for a year or two, I'd bet that $40 million per for a QB of Lamar's quality will look like a steal long before the ten years are up.

it wouldn't surprise me if they renegotiate several times over the course of the next decade

its not very linear in the way its been structured. that 60m year would certainly make me think thats a point of action, but most contracts have large caps after that decision year as well. with the way the low and high years are spaced out, im wondering if they just didnt look at future caps and assume theyll be low that year, maybe a planned rebuild year even. thats a 7 year window with a loaded team, which frankly is a long run for most teams let alone one thats going to be spending to retain. the next is 44m which is less than his average. so that would line up with a rebuild year, and then a year of "savings" to go reload. Probably overthinking it, but its certainly not a normal contract. Itll be interesting to see how they use it to restructure too.

    That’s $45,000,000 a year.
    $3,750,000 every month.
    $937,500 every week.
    $31,250 every day.
    $521 every hour.
    $8.60 every minute.

    Feel poor yet?

Mahomes could become the greatest ever but the contract makes me ask, "Where are the socialists when you really need them?"

It is a five year 140 million contract. The big numbers are all on the back end and nothing is real back there. What it does is force KC to limit their cap space going forwards for the next several years. Their window will close in four years unless the cap goes up 100 million more.

Any reason to believe tv network money won't increase? Teams seem to be betting on increase in revenue.

I don't think any team could project the cap 7 years in the future. Even a 1st round rookie is only a 5 year deal. I don't think it's a coincidence that it's halfway through the contract. That's a good time stop and see what you have and what makes sense.

Oh Bill O’Brien is NOT giving Watson anything CLOSE to that. He’s trading that mutha fucka.
