Very creative with the roster bonus vesting 2 years in advance. Read the fine print and both have outs if needed. Starting in 2026

    That's a great breakdown.

OTC had a similar take, but a little different.

    Some interesting bits:
My initial thought on the contract is that it’s a very good deal for the Chiefs. First of all the length of the contract is 10 new years, tying Mahomes to the Chiefs for 12 years.
This contract is essentially two contracts in one. The first five years of the contract will average under $40 million per year ($39.55 million to be exact) which is essentially in line with the current market which has Russell Wilson at $35 million a year as the top player. The next five years of the contract average $50.45 million and kick off with a year in which Mahomes will earn $59.95 million in cash and cap.
Basically with the exception of the final year of the contract any release of Mahomes would require payment of his entire next years salary. For the most part he is likely virtually guaranteed to earn all but the paragraph 5 of the 2031 season. For the Chiefs there is no out unless they can convince him to agree to a trade.
Another $25 million in incentives are tied to appearing in the Super Bowl and winning the MVP. These start in 2022 and will not be easy to earn. The $503 million number being thrown around is the sum of the $450 million in new money, $27 million in old money and $25 million in incentives.
The question as to whether or not this is a good contract for Mahomes ... From an injury perspective Mahomes is protected like nobody in history. ... As for the market he is probably undercutting himself.

If Lamar wins a SB and maintains (not surpass)his current trajectory he will absolutely command that much. That contract set the market value for a top 5 QB. And if Lamar simply stays at his current level and puts up similar numbers while winning a SB he will change the QB position forever. It will be interesting to watch the next 2 years.

If there are no fans in the stands the cap will go down. These numbers are only sustainable with a continually climbing cap. The TV money is the biggest part of it but tickets, concessions, parking, etc add up as well and without that revenue the cap will go down. Empty luxury boxes and club seats will bring down revenues quite a bit, and the cap with it.

That all said, Lamar could beat the contract but given the structure of the Mahomes deal it isn't the ridiculous amount it appears to be.

Normally I'd say, "sign the stud as soon as possible and you'll be better for it in the long run". Heck baseball teams are doing it before players' first major league games (which is a bit extreme).

But with such financial uncertainty in the near future, I have to take the opposite approach. Wait as long as you can to sign Lamar. Or, do the "% of cap" deal which I would be in favor of depending on the %.

This. Just say 20% of the cap (or whatever the % is for top tier qbs) and call it a day.

When Mahomes pulls up in his car, the Ted DiBiase theme starts playing.

Any above average qb resets the market every year. It's all about timing. It is why Dak wanted a shorter contract so he can cash in on new TV deal money
