Ravens 2020 Backfield and Running Game

The Ravens run game was dominant last year. It is an important, possibly the most important, facet of the team.

With the addition of JK Dobbins.......

How do you expect the staff will divvy up the carries?

How would you like to see the carries split up?

-Who do you think will be the lead RB and how many carries do you think they'll get?
Who would you pick as the lead RB and how many carries would you give them?

What are your overall expectations for the run game in your eye?

Not only were they best running team in the league last year they also set the NFL single season rushing record and Lamar set the NFL single season rushing record for QBs.

The Ravens had 3 members of the backfield make it to the pro-bowl:
    -Lamar Jackson -QB- 176 carries--1,206 yards--6.9 ypc

    -Mark Ingram -RB - 202 carries--1,018 yards--5.0 ypc

    -Patrick Ricard -FB

Even by advanced metrics the backfield was good.
According to Football Outsiders the Ravens had:

    #1 Rush Offense
    #3 Run Block OL

#3 RB in the League - Mark Ingram
    #11 RB in the League - Gus Edwards - 133 carries --711 yards--5.3 ypc

#4 Receiving RB in the League - Mark Ingram

    Profootball Focus:
#8 RB in the League - Mark Ingram
#29 RB in the League - Gus Edwards

    Changes to the Run Game:

    Additions - JK Dobbins

Subtractions - Marshall Yanda - PFF
    85.9-Pass Blocking-84.9 Run Blocking - 79.5 Run Blocking

Ravens had: 596 carries last year

If we’re including Yanda as a subtraction I’m curious what Fluker’s run blocking grade was

As to the actual question I think we carry all four halfbacks and they all have a role in the offense. I think Lamar ends up with “only” around 80-90 carries this year.

    Fluker per PFF:

    59.1 - Overall
    48th / 81 G

    Pass Block Grade
    62.2
    50th / 84 G

    Run Block Grade
    59.0

I must have been editing but there are multiple questions now.

Not that it’s a huge difference but their free site shows 60.4 overall.

Definitely surprised to see his run blocking grade (marginally) lower than his pass blocking though. That’s interesting.

I think Ingram of course starts the year as the lead back but if they manage his workload early I could actually see Dobbins getting the most carries down the stretch.

I’m still a believer in Justice Hill too. His ceiling is a complementary back on the short side of a time share but I think he could be a *really* good one.

I view the Dobbins - Ingram relationship akin to the Saints backfield w/ Ingram and Kamara.

If it were me I would make Dobbins the lead back IF he wins the job in training camp. (200 carries)

Ingram is at the age where his carries are more about quality then quantity. (170 carries)

I'm certainly a believer in Justice, I think the kid gets a worse rap on this forum then is warranted. I still think he has the most explosive burst/explosive acceleration on the team. I think he's a better runner then his ypc indicate and he's a kick returner.
In a couple years I envision Dobbins and Justice as the Ravens 1-2 punch.

I think Gus is the most at risk to lose carries.

I think Lamar carries drop to the 130 range.

Cutting his carries in half? He had 176 last year.

I'm on board! But, seems a stretch. I figured he would cut by like a third: so about 110 give or take. Around 7 per game.
(Which is what I also said last offseason!)

I think we’ll see some games without any carries at all. Some with ~10 but I doubt we’ll see any 15 carry games anymore.

How many of those 176 were kneels? I guess it’ll probably be more than 80-90 because he could have another 10-15 kneel downs.

116 "designed" or "called" runs, 37 scrambles, 19 kneels, 2 fumbled exchanges, 1 fumbled snap, 1 option pitch.

Lamar had 3 carries against the Dolphins. His 2nd lowest carry total was 7 (Bengals2). If we look only at designed runs, he had 2 against MIA and 4 against KC and CIN2.

If he scrambles at the same rate I’ll revise my prediction to 110 runs, before kneels. That would be 4.5 designed runs a game (down from 7.25 in 2019).

    Includes option keepers, clearly.
