Re: Week One staring interior line
I'm with everyone on the idea that no rookies are likely to start week 1 due to Corona shortened camp, and the team's inclination to value experience on the OL over a marginal difference in talent. With that in mind, I think it will be:
Stanley - Powers - Bozeman - Fluker - Zeus
Phillips is the swing tackle, and they cut Smith.
Skura starts the year on PUP.
Mekari is first man up on the interior at any of the three spots. Bredeson still makes the team as the 8th linemen.
Next season Phillips moves inside to start at guard, replacing Fluker, and they find a new backup swing tackle.

Re: Week One staring interior line
Yeah. I expect one or the other to be in the opening day lineup. Probably not both, but who the hell knows?
I think everyone will "compete". But I think the clear front-runners for the three interior spots are:
Bozeman – Mekari – Fluker – Powers
I expect three of those guys to start. Unless a rookie just blows away the competition in training camp and forces himself into the lineup: which of course would be a good thing. Maybe Harbs boy Phillips will be flat dominant at LG from the jump. That'd be great: would change the above arithmetic though.

Re: Week One staring interior line
If only. Vickers was the STARTING RG on the 2001 team. Although in fairness, I fully support willfully ignoring that fact.
BTW, people make a lot of the Searcy issue in 2001, but C went from Jeff Mitchell to Mike Flynn; RG went from Flynn to Kipp Vickers; and of course RT went from Harry Swayne to Sammy Williams. The running game probably would have been substantially worse than 2000 even if they did have Jamal and Priest again. It's amazing they made the playoffs with that line."Chin up, chest out."

Re: Week One staring interior line
Why so little love for Bredesen? He has the size and experience. Came from a solid program; played against reasonable competition. Admittedly not fast or agile, but well coached, hard worker, fundamentals are strong.
Not much really matters, and the rest doesn't matter at all.

Re: Week One staring interior line
I think the discussion has centered around their history of linemen drafted in rounds 4-6 usually toiling in back up roles as rookies. Bozeman, Powers, Jensen, Wagner. Even third rounders like Yanda and Brown didn't start right away.
Bredesen has a ton of college experience, and isn't going to have any trouble learning the offense. Probably close to Urshel's mental ability but better physically. High floor, low ceiling type of player. So, sure if they keep Bozeman at LG and Skura can't go, I can see Bredesen winning the center job.

Re: Week One staring interior line
He's a rookie.
And the easiest thing to do with the rookies in this context is just to say "not the week 1 starter".
The easiest thing to say about Skura is "he's hurt".
You throw Bredenson and Skura in the mix, you have 5 players competing for 2 spots, and that becomes quite tricky. You throw Phillips in the mix, you have Fluker and Phillips competing, again, more complicated.
It's not about how much people like each of these players. There seem to be a lot of 6'4 315 guys competing for LG / C, none have high sparq and they all did well (AA) in college. They're all basically the same guy, and we're not the ones watching them every day. The coaches, who do a good job, will make their assessments. We notice the trend that the Ravens generally don't start rookies week 1. We notice that players with Skura's injury generally don't get back to 100% right away.

I'm gonna go with:
Stanley - Fluker - Bozeman - Powers - ZeusDeuce
Powers & Brown were RG/RT teammates at Oklahoma. Could see them doing a reprise & having Fluker move to LG to add bulk next to Stanley.

Re: Week One staring interior line
It's probably just me, but I don't see much love for Mekari. I think he's our Center unless someone takes the job, but it won't be an easy battle... Bc

Re: Week One staring interior line
But Powers was a Left Guard. And Brown was a Left Tackle.
Traditionally, it's size and power on the right, and mobility and quickness on the left.
The idea of putting the players from the same team next to each other seems like a neat idea.
The Ravens have from Alabama - Bozeman, Fluker and Smith.
