    Lock Down Politics

I seriously doubt Governor Whitmer is acting in a vacuum of politics by taking away that Barbers license. As someone else said here, the thing has become very political. I think the parties are hedging bets and staking out sides in a way that they think will help them in November. This thing as with all things is about November 2020.

It just seems like Whitmer is going to get creamed for what she is doing. I'm sure they are polling this thing. Maybe she feels like if she caves that will make her look weak and blow her chances to be Joe's caregiver/VP this fall.

What do you guys think? The continued lockdown is starting to smell like a huge political loser to me.

People are revolting all around the country. More and more big name people are looking to leave states like California. Elon Musk is looking into moving manufacturing for Tesla to Nevada. Joe Rogan is even looking at moving to Texas.

Do you think this is a calculated move by Democrats to try to win away some older voters concerned about the virus that voted Trump last time? Or maybe to win over people that are on the corona dole now making more than they did prior to lockdown?

I feel like cold equations are involved here. The Barber thing just seemed like a bad political decision but I know I have my own bias and view and maybe am blind to who that action might appeal to.

Yep, I'm very surprised Elon Musk has been so vocal against this shutdown. He was a hero to the left due to his electric vehicles, which are pretty impressive as far as performance. Good for him. Probably not so much anymore.

That's possible, but old people are stubborn, and often wise.

I think it is a calculated move by the dems to hurt the economy (which will hurt trump). And to move closer to socialism. Getting more people dependent on gov will always help the dems.

Anyone that thinks this isn’t politics, is probably not paying attention. Or wants more socialism.

The sad thing, we have learned that gov power is more important than many things that people claimed to like. So many people are saying let’s stay locked in. Not even looking at the consequences like the loss of freedoms and entertainment. But let’s be serious. Most liberals love this. Most liberals hate competition, so they don’t care that many sports could be gone forever

    Re: Lock Down Politics

The answer originally was no... none of this was political, and you got to see some real leadership vs who the poser authoritarians were. The sides have since been able to collect themselves and put together strategies. The GOP wants to open up and get the economy back up and running... whether you agree or disagree with the COVID issues... that is what they want to do. The Democrats feel like keeping everything closed and restricting the economy does them better in the election... that forced safety is going to be their winning ticket... as a side benefit, they don't have to show what a collapsed shell of a man Joe Biden is.

The problem is that there is a VERY VERY small minority of people that are screaming that we should stay at home and the government should enforce it. Hell... when you go to a grocery store, about 30% of people are even wearing masks now, and that's actually recommended by the CDC, not just your governor... nobody cares. Old people are scared, but then they look at the fact that Cuomo, in his mad power dash, sent a bunch of known infected people into senior living facilities and ended up killing over 2,000 old people. You think they don't see that??? Same thing happened in PA. So they aren't winning there.

Also proof that people, even liberals, don't want authoritarian government demanding them around: A CA special election just had a GOP guy win by almost 20 points in a district that hasn't gone GOP in 22 years, and hasn't even been close. The GOP just showed a 30-40 point swing in a district... in CA... and the NUMBER 1 ISSUE was the stay at home orders. If you think the DNC didn't sprain their collective necks when that happened, you're nuts. You will start to see a lot of Blue states take reopening seriously. It is a losing argument, and there is not enough data to show that COVID is a threat to the USA on any scale that people take seriously. COVID has VERY arguably killed 85,974 (some studies have shown that number to be closer to 1,000 when you argue how many people have died from JUST COVID). It isn't even on pace to surpass 20% of how many people died of heart disease in a normal year. COVID is on par with a minor flu/pneumonia or diabetes at it's worst.

I quite agree with this assessment. I have a nice comfy job where I can work from home, and while I'm in the realm of econ a sizable amount of my coworkers lean left. Ironically it's these people who are loving the stay home, keep everyone shut down approach.

I also noticed the entire logic behind flatten the curve changed to no-one should get infected, ever. Sound odd...

    I agree as well.

I had a conversation about this with a Democrat friend of mine earlier this week, and it was pretty interesting. Figured I would share.

We were talking about work and how clients are being super risk averse and how we need to open everything back up. She disagreed with me about opening everything back up...even though most of the people at her company have had to take a paycut as a result of business being so slow. She was one of the lucky ones and hasn't been financially impacted.

I asked her when she would be ok with the entire country opening up and she was adamant that...until a vaccine is created, we should stay closed. When I asked her how many people die from the flu globally every year...I got the, "please don't compare this to the flu" line. Eventually she said that she didn't know how many people die from the flu every year. The WHO says that around 300,000 - 650,000 die from the flu every year. So...even with a flu vaccine in place...a shitload of people will die regardless. I explained that there's risk in EVERYTHING we do...driving, eating, drinking, etc. Hiding away from risk and a big bad virus every year is illogical.

I then gave her the whole..."does that make sense?" line and I was expecting a simple..."yeah, that does make sense" answer. For context, the friend I was talking to has a masters degree in psychology. She's insanely intelligent. Highly educated. Sharp as a tack. I think she's brilliant. A great SME to use on calls with clients.

The phone was quiet for a few seconds...

    Then she finally said it.

"That asshole has got to go. Period. That's all that matters."

    This is all about politics.

Agree with most of what has been said. I will throw in that keeping things closed makes it easier for them to push for elections by mail come November which the Dems would love. Notice there is no one coming up with possible solutions to voting in person with a Covid risk right now, which is exactly when you should be coming up with contingency plans.

This is a huge point. I think if they push the fear and panic another month or so that will give cover for liberal states to do what California did. That's a huge part of it.

Sadly that is all they can come back to. You can hit with them logic/facts that they can't dispute, and in the end it's all about getting rid of him. Absolutely anything is acceptable to achieve that end. Bill Maher famously said on his show that he hoped for a recession if it meant Trump loses the re-election. And the audience cheered, his panel nodded in agreement Wonder how they all feel about that now? I'm sure no one would dare ask him.
