  1. Proposed CBA Change Narrows "The Window"

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...h-year-option/

The major takeaway from this is in the last two paragraphs of the article:

And for quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, none of it matters; they arrived a year too early. For guys like Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, and Sam Darnold, they were right on time.

For Jackson particularly, it means that the last pick in round one of the 2018 draft is on track to be eligible for a salary equivalent to the franchise tag in his fifth year.
That means, if the Ravens decide to execute Lamar's fifth year option prior to the 2023 season, it'll likely cost upwards of $20M+ to do so.

    $20M?

This would likely have his tag close to if not more than $30M by the time he's getting to year 5. Franchise tag is going to skyrocket for QB's soon...Mahomes, Watson, Dak likely all will be at or over that $35M mark shortly.
Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

Probably not outside the realm of possibility. That means the period of Lamar's "cheap" rookie deal well and truly will end after 2022.

The cap will be higher as well. But the Raves if Lamar keeps this pace going will be more than likely get an extension after his fourth year.

I think you’re right. With a new deal they can structure it to make the cap number less than the 5th year option if they want to. The flexibility becomes an advantage. You’re going to sign him anyway so it’s better to do it in a way that helps your cap.

This is a point I would go with. If you have a player worth exercising that fifth-year option on, you should probably be working on an extension for him anyway. That fifth year option is not cheap.

The window may not narrow but could be much more expensive than they thought. What is does mean is getting LJ extended is more time sensitive than the team likely anticipated.

If this is what could happen why not just let the tag play out. The 5th year FA tag would still be less than what the top QB's will be getting. You take the risk of losing the player in year 6 but they could take another QB in year 4 to prepare for it possibly happening.

Find it odd that Brady and Pats blame CBA uncertainty on why there are no contact discussions

In Lamar's case this just gives the Ravens a little more incentive to give him the early extension they were almost certainly going to give him anyway. They are going to want to lock him up, and they may well do it after then end of next season. That way they can put their financial plan in place and build the rest of the team with that in mind.
