Re: 17-game schedule nearing resolution with NFLPA
20 game season with NO pre-season.
90 man roster week 1
80 man roster week 2
70 man roster week 3
60 man roster week 4
50 man roster week 5 and beyond.
Weeks 1-4 - EVERY field player gets 10 snaps at some position, except for kicking specialists.
The object is to WIN the game.

Re: 17-game schedule nearing resolution with NFLPA
Not possible at the moment. There's a longstanding SCOTUS decision that held that Fridays are for high school football, Saturdays are college ball, and Sundays are for the pros (although it seems like high school and college are more or less interchangeable). Its served the NCAA and NFL pretty well. I think that its more manageable for fans to have their day for college ball and their day for pro ball. The Friday blackout is a little antiquated at this point though. High school ball just isn't a big part of many communities outside of a few states like Texas at this point.

Not gonna happen. The NFL avoids Friday and Saturday to not interfere with HS and college games. One, it is good PR and two, it keeps the legislatures of various states and Congress from getting involved. I could see a lot of states like TX, LA, and FL where Friday night football is big outlawing Friday NFL games in their states.

Not sure if sarcasm or outright trolling...
This makes as much sense as a 17 game season. And because the ball is shaped weird, you could theoretically end up with an 0-16 team beating a 16-0 team on the road to a Super Bowl. The sun could explode today as well, and we'd still have about the same odds as either of this things happening, but it's not completely impossible.

Re: 17-game schedule nearing resolution with NFLPA
NCAA has their 68 team March Madness, 8 teams have to play to be the bottom 16th seed in each of 4 regions. A #1 seed in a region has lost to a #16 seed - Virginia and it came back the following year to win the NCCA title.
A 17 game schedule makes no sense other than to minimize the application of tie breakers and from the NFL perspective get a game playing the players less than market value under the present proposed contract.

Re: 17-game schedule nearing resolution with NFLPA
I did not read this thread but did anyone throw out the idea of having a second bye week to go along with an additional game?

Re: 17-game schedule nearing resolution with NFLPA
Many have proposed a 2nd bye. Surprisingly, this appears to have has fallen by the wayside. Ditto expanded rosters.
However, these have perhaps gotten lost in the recent shuffles. Both great ideas.
Huh?
17th game adds a billion-plus to the NFL's annual revenue. Players get half. I believe that these goodies "make sense".
In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T came in fourth, behind ML King (3rd), Abe Lincoln (2nd) and Homer Simpson (1st).

Re: 17-game schedule nearing resolution with NFLPA
I don't believe there is any SCOTUS decision regarding football scheduling. SCOTUS rules on constitutional issues and there is nothing in the Constitution about football scheduling.
It is just something the NFL doesn't do to avoid it becoming an issue in legislatures, where laws could be enacted. But there are none because the NFL smartly avoids playing when HS and colleges do.
