Re: Free College and Cancelling Student Debt
That is our plan as well. We are saving for college, but we will be what a HS Counselor "should" be... if they have passion for something, and genuinely like school, then we will help pay, but FIRST, they need to get the credits at a local Community College to make sure. While they are at Community College, we are saying, "If we are paying, then one course a semester needs to be a trade you are interested in". If were going to dump the money for those 2 years of getting a BA, then he better be DAMNED sure that is his path. Plus, everyone should be at least moderately competent at a trade anyhow. That way, if they need a job during college, they can be a laborer at a skilled trade, and make decent money. I'd rather just provide him the money we saved for a downpayment on his first home, and get that financial ball rolling for him at 20...

Absolutely.
Being able to do shit with your hands competently is such a valuable asset...even if it isn't your profession. You just save so much money and it's super rewarding knowing you can do something like that for yourself.
I built my dining room table. I built the cabinets in my house. I built my kitchen island. I retrofitted a vent hood into my cabinets. I put in a picket fence in my back yard. I installed new toilets....
These are all things most people can do and you don't realize how much money you can save just by being fairly handy. The minute I had some dude quote me $3,000 to make built-in bookshelves for my living room was the minute I said eff that, I can do it for way less. YouTube and a kreg jig and a couple of bucks on Craigslist power tools....that's turned into a full-on side hustle making blanket chests, toy boxes, cutting boards, dough boards, whiskey cabinets, etc.
The only trade I don't screw around with is electrical and that's because it terrifies me.Disclaimer: The content posted is of my own opinion.

Your so right.I tore out and redid our master bathroom last winter, from plumbing to tile work. Taught myself everything through YouTube. Lots of great information out there, some better than others, you just need to convince yourself you can learn it and apply what you learn.

Re: Free College and Cancelling Student Debt
While I agree that more kids need to learn a trade and it should still be taught in high school, you guys are forgetting one huge thing....kids are LAZY! Ask most people under 30 if they’d rather pay someone or cut their own lawn. I’d bet any amount 90% would rather pay someone else. Sadly this mentality starts with my generation. We were the first exposed to the “college is the only way “ idealism. Until we stop with this dumb shit , nothing is gonna change. We’ve allowed this to happen on our watch.

Re: Free College and Cancelling Student Debt
The irony in all of this is that many colleges and universities are the poster children for Liberalism and, by extension, Socialism. They feel everyone should be entitled to attend college and yet never once have even entertained the idea of making it more affordable. The colleges are going to continue to gouge people, they just want it to be the American taxpayer that they swindle.

Re: Free College and Cancelling Student Debt
While I generally say ..do what makes you happy....some jobs aren’t for everyone. Not a thing wrong with college ..but I wouldn’t trade 5yrs of trade school for any degree.
Most of my old neighbors in Hazard County were College people. Now since I’m a bit of a Dick and really can’t help myself ...at gatherings where the liquor was flowing and they’d be bragging about “we went here or we just got this “ I’d often ask a simple question of my “well educated “ friends. When’s the last time your bring home paycheck had a coma in it? Not gross ...net. Yeah. That would shut them up fairly quick when the uneducated , beer drinking ,asshole SteamFitter/welder from Dirty Ass Dundalk not only made more than them but brought home more. Lol. Daddy didn’t raise a dummy. A strong work ethic and a skilled trade will provide you with all the life you want.
So college for everyone is the same as Medicare for everyone as far as I’m concerned. One small step from Communism. When will these people stop?
