    Re: 2020 Off-Season Thread: News & Rumors

I wouldn't have paid Henry. He had a great season but he also stayed healthy for the first time in his career. He's one of those guys who doesn't miss games but is always getting banged up. Henry is a very big target. He reminds me of Jamal Lewis who broke down pretty quickly

That poor (Ha! I couldn't even say that with a straight face) ran through 2 and a half of the best teams in the entire league, nearly dragging Ryan Tannehill to a Super Bowl. You have to give him something.

He got the Franchise Tag money which was $12.75 million. That's not exactly nothing.

Jamal is a pretty good comp. Jamal rushed for 1,000 yards when he was 29, and then fell off the cliff. If Henry does the same, the Titans will have gotten their money’s worth.

Look, I’m usually the guy driving the “Don’t Pay The Running Back” train. I think Pittsburgh was smart to not get sucked into paying Lev Bell, for example.

But Henry *is* your team in Tennessee. They have already lost some o-line talent. The only chance they have of continuing to get in the playoff hunt is to ride Henry until he breaks down, and hope that it’s not for a couple years.

They paid Tannehill, but it’s not like that guy is going to carry the team on his back. The Titans have said “this is who we are and how we are going to take our shot” and I respect that.

Like the Ravens of old, they will probably manage to be around the playoffs every year, and if they get in, they will be a team that other teams don’t want to face.

no doubt they feel the only way Tannehill will have success is with that supporting cast around him

They see a window and are trying to capitalize. I personally think four years is too long but it seems like the deal is good for both sides with Henry getting half of his money guaranteed while Tennessee didn't overpay imo.

Agreed. It's always about the details, and the Titans did pretty well.

He was going to make $10MM under the franchise tag anyway. They've reduced his 2020 cap number to $6MM. 2021 that number goes to $13MM, which is still in line with market value for RBs. After that, the guarantees are over, and he is cuttable. If they keep him for 2022-23, they will be paying him just in line with what McCaffery, Bell, and Elliott are making. And they can let him go with minimal dead money if they decide to move in another direction.

    Details are here: https://overthecap.com/player/derrick-henry/4758/

BTW, Tannehill also can be cut pretty painlessly after 2021, so the Titans are really just committing to two years with these two guys as a foundation.

I don't think it's a horrible contract. I just wouldn't have done it with the tag available. It probably doesn't really matter because the tag over the next 2 years wouldn't be that far off from the guaranteed number. I just don't like his injury history. The risk is really 2 years when you could cut him vs. 1 year when you just let the tag expire. If you think you're going to get 2 years anyway then it's not a big risk. This isn't the Bell deal. It's fine but not something I would have done until I saw Henry put a 2nd season up at the same level which the tag would have let them do. However, its more personal preference based on the tremendous number of options available next year than anything else.

Agreed. The opposite side though is the benefit. If he become Adrian Peterson for the next two years, and keeps cranking out yards and dominating games, you essentially have bought options for 2022 and 2023 at what, by then, will be below-market for a top RB.
