With that in mind, don't overpay up front.

    That may very well be.

Does tagging someone affect the comp pick formula?

I think the smart thing to do is tag Judon. Try to work out a trade, if the right trade comes on the table pull. If not sign a vet or two and see how Bowser and Fergeson progress.

The risk is that if a trade doesn't come, your on the hook for the tag.

Tagging the player means that they won’t count in either direction toward comp picks.

Comp picks are all about net loss to unrestricted, traditional feee agency. Anyone who’s contract did not naturally end is of no importance.

Would Judon be one to hold out if he’s tagged and not signed? I get the feeling he would be.
Also isn’t there a new CBS contract that needs to be fixed before free agency and the tags can be applied? I thought I seen that somewhere but can’t really remember exactly.

    Re: Matt Judon

I think the franchise tag is definitely in play.

I do think hes a good player. hes pretty well rounded even if hes not elite at any one thing, and I think thats a good skillset to have in this defense. He got 9.5 sacks with Tyrus Bowser being the only other Pass rushing threat on the team... thats actually saying something. Hes not Suggs, but hes a very good player thats going to be worth market value. I hope hes here for a long time, and I hope we still invest in more. Ferg hopefully takes a step forward as well, but a top talent at OLB is still needed and you dont get better by not having Judon here and increasing need.
