    Rallying cry of the Never-Trumpers!

    OpEd today in the NYT:

We Are Republicans, and We Want Trump Defeated
The president and his enablers have replaced conservatism with an empty faith led by a bogus prophet.
By George T. Conway III, Steve Schmidt, John Weaver and Rick Wilson
    Dec. 17

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/17/o...n-project.html

I've never heard of these guys before. The blurb with the piece says NYT describes them with "The authors have worked for and supported Republican campaigns." Then the bottom of the page has this:

George T. Conway III is an attorney in New York. Steve Schmidt is a political strategist who worked for President George W. Bush, Senator John McCain and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. John Weaver is a Republican strategist who worked for President George H.W. Bush, Senator John McCain and Gov. John Kasich. Rick Wilson is a Republican media consultant and author of “Everything Trump Touches Dies” and the forthcoming “Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America From Trump and Democrats From Themselves.”

The piece strikes a calm even tone to start:

That’s why we are announcing the Lincoln Project, an effort to highlight our country’s story and values, and its people’s sacrifices and obligations. This effort transcends partisanship and is dedicated to nothing less than preservation of the principles that so many have fought for, on battlefields far from home and within their own communities.
    ...
Our efforts are aimed at persuading enough disaffected conservatives, Republicans and Republican-leaning independents in swing states and districts to help ensure a victory in the Electoral College, and congressional majorities that don’t enable or abet Mr. Trump’s violations of the Constitution, even if that means Democratic control of the Senate and an expanded Democratic majority in the House.
    (emphasis added)

Country over party?? That doesn't even make any sense.

They get more, uh, unsparing as they go on:

He has neither the moral compass nor the temperament to serve. His vision is limited to what immediately faces him — the problems and risks he chronically brings upon himself and for which others, from countless contractors and companies to the American people, ultimately bear the heaviest burden.

But this president’s actions are possible only with the craven acquiescence of congressional Republicans. They have done no less than abdicate their Article I responsibilities.

Indeed, national Republicans have done far worse than simply march along to Mr. Trump’s beat. Their defense of him is imbued with an ugliness, a meanness and a willingness to attack and slander those who have shed blood for our country, who have dedicated their lives and careers to its defense and its security, and whose job is to preserve the nation’s status as a beacon of hope.

Congressional Republicans have embraced and copied Mr. Trump’s cruelty and defended and even adopted his corruption. Mr. Trump and his enablers have abandoned conservatism and longstanding Republican principles and replaced it with Trumpism, an empty faith led by a bogus prophet. ...

Mr. Trump and his fellow travelers daily undermine the proposition we as a people have a responsibility and an obligation to continually bend the arc of history toward justice. They mock our belief in America as something more meaningful than lines on a map.

Our peril far outstrips any past differences: It has arrived at our collective doorstep, and we believe there is no other choice. We sincerely hope, but are not optimistic, that some of those Republicans charged with sitting as jurors in a likely Senate impeachment trial will do likewise.
    Fun stuff.

Over-under on how long until these traitorous apostatizers come begging to be allowed back into the fold, whimpering like beaten dogs? Do you give them even three months?

Re: Rallying cry of the Never-Trumpers!

Oh, you Red-Heads might enjoy this. Libtard WashPost columnist Jennifer Rubin interviews one of the guys behind the OpEd:

I caught up by phone with Schmidt, who has run a slew of Republican presidential, Senate and gubernatorial campaigns.
    ...
He stressed that the burden is on Democrats to understand this mind-set and elect someone who can defeat Trump. He referred to the British election: “American and British politics have always orbited each other,” he said, pointing to Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, Tony Blair and Bill Clinton, and other parallel leaders. “We just saw an example with Jeremy Corbyn about what happens when the loony left is unfiltered.” Democrats, he warned, must “nominate someone with the broadest possible coalition.”
    ...
Giving Democrats some “tough love,” Schmidt warned, “In 2018, there were millions of Republicans who voted for Democrats to put a check on Trump.” If Democrats are not careful, “Millions will turn around and elect Trump to put a check on Democrats.” He argued that there has never been a more unpopular idea to run on than Medicare-for-all, an idea rejected by union members, teachers, middle management and others. “The cost isn’t in dollars; it is in Trump’s ability to demagogue it to victory,” Schmidt told me. He said he hoped that Democrats will select a candidate who speaks to our deepest values and shared concerns, who shows “toughness but not meanness” and who can communicate, “We are all in this together.”
    ...
Whether Schmidt and his band of patriotic Republicans can help end the Trump presidency and Trumpism depends on Americans’ willingness to perceive the grave danger to our democracy and Democrats’ ability to rise to choose a nominee wisely.
It's not like this guy is ready to give Dems a blank check. He expects / needs them to be responsible and wise, not skew "loony left".

This is just dumb. Obama has dictatorial powers with the “Justice” Department acting as his Gestapo. Add to it, we finally get a President who wants to better America as opposed to some Muslim Country and these idiots go wild.

Jennifer Rubin isn't a "libtard" btw. Steve Schmidt was an integral part of Palin's campaign. Conway is the husband of Kellyanne Conway - personal enabler for Trump. These guys, including Rubin, were all respected Republican operatives back when Republicans were associated more with conservatism and white grievance was still a covert driving force behind the GOP vs THE overt and essential driving force behind the GOP.

Whoops - I just read something else that referenced one of these guys -- maybe Schmidt? -- and it said that he publicly renounced the Repubs last year, maybe August, and switched to Dem.

So I guess "how you mean" is, quite literally! At least in one instance.

Conway hates Trump. I don’t even follow this stuff that much and I know that.

I call bullshit -- you have never respected a republican. Period. End of story. The only time you have anything nice to say about any republican is when they speak out against Trump.

I find it ironic this group names their project after Lincoln, a president who did things that were impeachable.

These guys are swamp creatures, whether technically on the repub side or dem side. It boils down to this, they think govt is the solution and that they, in their ultimate wisdom, should be allowed by govt to institute their plans
