Why check down when you can do it yourself and get more?

Realistically speaking, that threat allows you to send guys on deeper routes, which draws more defenders away from the line and opens up those lanes. Worst case, we know we can get an easy 10 yards.

Re: Lamar Passing Chart Week 11

Teams that noticeably tried to clog the middle couldn't set the edges. Curiously it didn't help them shut down Mark Andrews either.

The biggest offenders in this regard were Arizona, and Cincy (x2).

Conversely the Patriots contained Lamar on the ground and were able to limit Andrews to 2 grabs but the Ravens offense *still* scored 30 points against a team that had been giving up less than 10 a game. (+ there was also a defensive TD). Most impressively is the 4th quarter where the offense took over. So much for The Hoodie making adjustments to the "unsustainable offense." If the Chargers "figured us out" after 1 game, then surely Belichick could make the adjustments he needed at the half, right? Especially after having a week to prepare and a full year of film?

Yes I know we had the extra week. Yes, that's a factor. But we dominated the 4th Q of that game. That is very worth remembering. Our last TD in that game came on a 17 play drive (-3 plays for penalties so officially 14) that was nothing but short runs and a few short passes to Ingram and Boyle.

The drive before that one was also a 14 drive. Two possessions, two 14 play drives. Two TD's.

Belichick's team couldn't adjust. You could argue Roman outmaneuvered Belichick. Or you could argue the Ravens' execution was just too good. Or you could argue the Pats just couldn't control for every possible option, and Lamar Jackson just kept picking the correct one, over and over and over.

Isn't that what we'd say Tom Brady did if he moved his team down the field on TWO 14 play 4th quarter TD drives to kill off a big game?

And he's reading that on the fly and screwing you.

You have to guess what he will do, fake the defense for it and then do the opposite. Plus the fake goes against all the football instincts of the defensive players to sell it so they start out on their heels. It's as if they must fight all their training just to make plays. Then they get juked out of their shoes.

Bill quit in the 4th quarter

Something that I haven't seen mentioned. Since the Ravens don't break the huddle until ~15 seconds are left on the play clock (when the helmet speaker shuts off), all the reading of the defense is done completely by Lamar. Compare that to the Rams, who line up as fast as possible so McVay can talk Goff through his reads.

This! And it points out a profound truth about how Ozzie built the Ravens over the years. Ozzie built to stop the run, because if you can't stop the run, you are P-H-U-Q-U-E-D. Nothing else matters: game over.

If you can stop the run, then you can compete on the other stuff. But if you can't stop the run, the other team will just stomp you.

That's the problem for NFL defenses right now. When you face the Ravens, you MUST stop the run. Because Roman isn't going to go away from it just to prove how smart he is. He likes it when the O-line is gashing 'em for 7 to 12 yards a pop. That shit is fun for him. He likes that the way some people like porn: he can just keep watching it all afternoon. Then pull it up on vid and watch it again & again into the wee hours Sunday night, until it's time to start game-planning for the next team.

So as you say, defenses have to stop the run. And Lamar is pinpoint.

    It's a problem.

The Ravens threw wrinkles at Belichick they'd been saving.

They've added a little every week.

"saving some for the playoffs" is a myth.

I see something different on offense every week. Every game has had a new wrinkle or method of attack on offense. I've been waiting for years to see this type of offense.

It's also keeping the defense from adjusting to whatever formation we're trotting out on that play.
