Lamar in Football Outsiders Film Room

Very, very nice breakdown of Lamar operating the "quick game":

Despite the near-universal celebration of Jackson's success, it still feels as though the young passer is not getting his due in all the areas he deserves. Nobody at this point would deny Jackson's arm strength, baseline accuracy, or scrambling skills, but not enough is said of how well Jackson conducts himself with quick-game passing. Maybe it's because quick-game passing can be mundane -- which is a totally fair thing to believe -- but it's also entirely possible that Jackson's initial reputation as an incomplete passer has caused some of his finer traits to be glossed over. At least with respect to having a consistent process, Jackson is one of the best quick-game passers in the league because of how timely and nuanced he is.

Gifs from plays vs KC, Pitt, Cincy, Pats showing Lamar holding defenders with his eyes, quickly deliving to the open man, etc. No runs, and no deep throws: this piece is specifically focused on the short passing game. Terrific.

It irritates me that we have to shift through mindless babbling on tv when information like this is out there.

Awesome article! Thanks for sharing, Jim.

It definitely gives some ammo to counter both the "1 read and run" and the "not a great passer" arguments.

Also I noticed the second play they pointed out against the Steelers is the Oklahoma "mesh" pass concept.

The perception of Lamar as a passer has always been overshadowed by his running ability.

Dude had always been a good passer. Even now his perception is dominated by his running ability and skewed because of (a) GRo’s scheme (b) the talent level of the WRs.

Good article, I agree completely. Great insights and exposition.

You don’t get 15/17, with one spike and one drop by chance. If he averages 6+ on the run and 8+ when passing its pick your poison time. His accuracy over the middle to his TE is dynamic. It moves the ball right down the field. If this team is healthy it matches up well against any team in the NFL. Grind out four long TD drives with a dominate running game and you shorten the game plus keep your defense strong for late in the game.

Also because his runs make the highlight reel every week.

He's a walking highlight reel, both running and passing. It's so weird being the team that is giving defensive coordinators nightmares instead of their defensive coordinators.

I'm not so sure walking is the right way to put it in this context...

IMO Lamar Jackson was not a good passer last year, alot of mistakes, ugly Ints too many fumbles and some of the ugliest incompletetions ever thrown and bad mechanics. Of course he was a rook so its whatever but what i saw was not good, not terrible but yeah.

And now hes deal'n dimes and is the MVP cawcaw mfers
