I guess you're right again. A parent has the right to abuse and neglect their children. But they will go to jail/have the child taken from them if found out.

So is that really a right?

the cameras alone are not illegal.

that said it can easily be used as a means of proving abuse (psychological) and/or child endangerment.

I think theres a very strong case here that they wouldnt just be stumbling upon child pornography, as an unintended consequence. its the sole purpose for installing the cameras, to catch him doing what they expect (a child performing a sexual act). I dont think that would be hard to prove in court based off what little we know. the analogy given isnt very good, its not illegal to have a video of somebody doing drugs (though it could be used as evidence against them), it is illegal to have video of a child in sexual situations. the video itself is whats illegal, not the act.

It's purpose is to have him know if he does it, he will be videotaped and will be punished. So it's real purpose is a deterrent. (not saying I agree with what they're doing)

The same way security cameras outside of a home would act as a deterrent to prevent a home break-in. Sounds logical to me. I don't agree with these parents either, but I can follow the logic.

    Again, not illegal.

Btw, it seems like there is a leap being made here that these parents are using the footage from these cameras to get their rocks off. Is that happening? I didn't read through the whole article. If they're not...then what's the problem?

so, if the parent puts up this camera to survey the home...and the kid wants to bump uglies w/his girlfriend...are the parents legally in trouble because it was taped?

    I'm not following you here...

That's kind of what I was saying earlier. It depends on what is being filmed.

So what we 'know' is that the boy was caught masturbating and the parents threatened to put in cameras and check them to see if the boy continued to do so.
I put 'know' if single quote marks because what we have is only what the boy says. Which may differ from the whole truth of the matter....

'What can I do?' he wrote in the subreddit r/legal advice. 'I'm 15 and think I should be allowed to touch my own body. This is embarrassing and destroys my privacy, please help.'

The teen revealed that his parents caught him masturbating earlier this month.

'My dad barged in without knocking and started screaming at me,' he wrote. 'He and my mom then sat me down and told me I'm not allowed to touch myself.'
A 15-year-old boy in Alaska took to Reddit to ask for legal advice after he said his parents set up security cameras in his bedroom and bathroom to make sure he doesn't masturbate

The teen said his parents are against sexual activities before marriage. He wasn't even allowed to participate in his school's sex education classes - leaving him to only learn 'some things' on the internet'.

Although the boy promised his parents he wouldn't masturbate anymore, he said his word wasn't good enough for them.

The teen found an Amazon package at his home and discovered there were indoor security cameras inside.

'I asked my dad and he said they are putting them in my room and bathroom so they can monitor and make sure I'm not masturbating,' the boy wrote.

They told the teen that they would check the cameras every day to make sure he didn't dare masturbate.

I guess i shouldnt have said sole purpose, but the intent of a camera is to record. thats what they control, not what he does. as has been pointed out, in those two rooms, he cannot even change or take a shower without being videotaped (presumably). ignorance is not a defense here, its unreasonable to think they werent going to be filming a child in some sort of undress, so take the masturbation out of it, its still child porn being created.

whos saying theyre getting off from it? you dont have to have proof that a guys masturbating to child porn, for it to be illegally possessed. again the mere fact that it exists in their possession, is the crime.

so, if the parent puts up this camera to survey the home...and the kid wants to bump uglies w/his girlfriend...are the parents legally in trouble because it was taped?

the real question is are they in possession of a video that would be deemed child porn? if the police are made aware of a complaint, and show and see this set up, with video of him undressed and/or masturbating, you can bet those charges will stick. How can you argue that there was no intent to create video of a naked child by placing a camera in his room and bathroom?

maybe im wrong though, maybe is distribution over possession.

The parents are clearly ridiculous here...

I'd be curious to hear how a lawyer would respond to this.

I think we are all in agreement on this at least.

The kid is 15 - there are FAR worse things he could be doing than himself. At some point, a parent needs to learn to pick their battles, and this is absolutely the wrong hill to die on. Best case scenario (legally speaking) is that it is perfectly legal to use video surveillance to deter your child from their preferred method of relaxation, but you utterly destroy your relationship with that child (trust goes both ways, and 15 is when it's really going to start to matter). Worst case for the parents, this is illegal, and they lose custody of their kid and end up in prison.

BTW, GreatWhiteNorthRaven - in Maryland, my understanding is that it is legal for a parent to give their minor child alcohol in a private residence, to be consumed in that residence or within the boundaries of that property. Maryland Criminal Law Section 10-117. Put simply, I can give my child a beer at my house, so long as he stays inside my property line. I cannot give your kid a beer anywhere. Religious ceremonies are explicitly exempt from the restriction of furnishing minors with alcohol.

If you put it in a bathroom facing the shower it definitely is
