Re: John Brown
Awesome post!
Another thing to take from this is how unlikely it is that Crabtree, Brown, and Snead will all be hits. Half of these are misses. Only 36% are hits.
It's incredibly risky to rely on 3 new acquisitions to be your top 3 receivers. For those counting on Hurst to supplement, he does look good so far, but counting on Rookie TEs is also risky.
There's a ton of uncertainty over the quality of pass catcher we will have this year.

Re: John Brown
To follow up on the point about Hurst, in the last 10 years 8 TEs have been selected in the first round. They've averaged 29 catches for 326 yds receiving and 2.5 TDs. That's not a huge contribution.

Re: John Brown
I'd offer an option type contract like the did with Wallace. If the Ravens pick the option Brown would get a nice payday. If not he's a free agent and can try to get more. Those kind of deals work great for older players or players with some risk. If the Ravens decline the option there is no cap hit.

Re: John Brown
I think if Brown is productive and can stay healthy all season ..Ravens have to try and offer him something. Maybe a one yr and one option deal? But at 28-29 he’s still useful for another couple yrs. Snead I think has a 3 yr? With team options on the 2nd and 3rd? I think. He’s only 26.
Bottom line ...if the current group gets us to the playoffs and maybe more ...bring them all back but still draft WR high in the draft next year. Gotta be more like Pitts and other Great teams. Don’t draft for need. Draft for the future. WRs , DBs and Oline are always in demand.

Re: John Brown
Now, if we want to include Rice into the equation, I feel that it is more of a debate. However, Jacoby Jones was more so gifted by the attention garnered elsewhere. When healthy, Jon Brown is a better vertical threat than Torrey Smith. His issue is health. I would certainly take Boldin over Snead, even at that time in Boldin's career. Pitta ran the route and caught the ball. The only notable pass I could ever remember him dropping was on the drive before the Mile High Miracle. He caught just about everything.

Re: John Brown
Boldin, Mason and Houshmanzadeh were a good trio, but they all did the same thing and all were on the back nine of their careers.

Re: John Brown
I think it is. On paper, I mean.
Mason/Boldin/Housh were OLD! They were crafty, but there was no speed threat in the group.
Boldin/Torrey/Jacoby were limited. Torrey & Jacoby were one-dimensional straight-line guys. What made this group effective was (a) Boldin being so strong in the slot, and (b) Pitta & Rice being significant factors in the passing game. Rice was gigantic in the passing game; that's the only way our current group falls short of Boldin/Torrey/Jacoby.
Our current group brings a much more diverse set of complementary skills:
- Crabtree — big strong "possession" guy
- Smokey — Deep threat
- Snead — shifty sure-handed slot guy
IF Hayden Hurst delivers what he's flashed in preseason and camp; if he turns out to be ~70% or so of what Pitta was: then it's our best set of receivers so far this century. I'm not even exaggerating, our best since the calendar turned over to 2000. Which is sad; but very encouraging for us this season.
We just need a multidimensional weapon out of the backfield to complete the set. To say that a Ray Rice -type is the "only" thing this personnel group lacks, severely minimizes how important Mr Fourth-and-29 was to the success of our offense. Kenneth Dixon showed a lot of that in college; I was disappointed he didn't play the other day. Maybe Alex Collins has grown some receiving skills over the offseason.
Also of course we need continued good health from the group.
